Re: JUSTUSNAK..Fall is in the air!!!! Well, for a few days!

Oh, what I would give to have hills!!! Flat land = wetlands. UGH! My gardens are dry...but, there are STILL wet areas on my property. I was trying to mow yesterday, got the mower stuck twice in the MUD! somad The wooded area behind the house is still wet...yuk! Actually, in the new paddock areas...it stays pretty wet...I am hopeing they dont turn it into a mud hole. At least I can rotate them now. big_smile Well, after the gates go in, and the shelters get built! LOL

Oh, I wish hubby would do that.....he still wants to pull up the dang fence posts....I think he's nuts. I'm getting 2 goats next year....I'll sneak them in under my coat if I have to.

The paddocks look great!

Re: JUSTUSNAK..Fall is in the air!!!! Well, for a few days!

You know, I remember not too long ago, hubby looked at me and said.."thats it, no more building anything for a while" Maybe we dont have the same understanding what " a while" is!?? LOL
I went out this morning to feed, when I noticed all the sheep and goats are mingling in the same paddock! barnie This means the Ram is in with the Ewes! UGH! So I go to investigate, and it seems that the youngest ram was trying to get through the gate...got his head stuck in the gate, and lifted it off the hinges. hmm Thankfully he was able to get out and not break his neck, or horns! Nothing worse than a ram with a broken horn, ya can't hear them coming! LOL ( beep beep) OK, bad joke. Anyways...My neighbor was outside and she came and helped me get them back where they belong, and fix the gate. My poor neighbor...I get her into lots of things...she never expected. While we was trying to move the pygmy buck, he got her with his horns. OUCH! I tried to tell her to grab him by the horns...but she thought it was cute the way he was lowering his head at her. roll At least untill he got her! lol So, I had to go get fencing to cover the openings in the gates, to keep little heads out.
Today, BIL came over and hubby went to get the woodsplitter. They was able to get 3 ricks split and stacked. big_smile Im so glad BIL was here to help with that. I was able to run into the next town to get pine shaveings, and a small roll of fencing for the gates. I got home, and cleaned the large coop...4 pens. All the old shaveings go into thier yard...easy. Then throw in new shaveings. Then I went to the barn, and put the fencing on 2 of the gates.  Came inside about 7pm, made porkchops for dinner...and now its Folgers time! LOL

Re: JUSTUSNAK..Fall is in the air!!!! Well, for a few days!

Wow, August 2nd...ALREADY! Where did summer go? It wont be long not untill fall comes..and dare I say it, the snow will fly! hide
Yesterday hubby worked all day splitting firewood. I think he was able to get between 3 and 5 ricks done. clap I worked in the house most of the day..canning corn. I was able to get 21 pints done. th Woke up this morning and could barely move my hands. ( from cutting all that corn from the cobs.) So, I had to take the log splitter back to town....I went to a store, and found a corn cutter! Woohoo! I was so glad to see that little contraption. No more cramped hands for me! tongue
Speaking of corn..some might remember last spring, when I planted. I did a little experiment. I planted a few conventional rows of corn then I free seeded the rest of the corn over the tater bed. well...here are the results so far. Everything was watered and fertilized the same.
The rows of corn look pretty sad. skinny, most have no ears...and the ones that DO have ears, are only about 3 or 4 ft tall, and the ears are small!

The corn I planted over the taters... looking GREAT! There are 2 ears to most stalks, and the ears are looking plump. The corn is well over 6 ft tall.

I was peeking at the taters as well..and they are doing great! I cant waite to harvest, and see what the end results are.

Do tell more about the corn experiment!  Were the taters up when you planted the corn?  How is harvest done?

Looks neat.

Re: JUSTUSNAK..Fall is in the air!!!! Well, for a few days!

I planted the taters a few weekes before the corn. The taters were getting pretty tall, and blooming before the corn had a chance to shadow it.
As for harvest..after the corn is harvested....I plan to just pull the stalks by hand...then finish with the taters. I will let you know hopefully how many pounds of taters there are. From what I am seeing so far...it should be good. There are about 65 potato plants in there...somewhere! LOL

Re: JUSTUSNAK..Fall is in the air!!!! Well, for a few days!

Now waite a minute....LOL. I said the corn looks good...the taters I have no idea how many I will get. But, companion gardening is supposed to work well. Something about how one plant puts nutrients into the soil that the other plant needs...Im really looking forward to harvest...Now I have to plan for next year...what else can I mix..and get to work?? Im thinking....peas and carrotts? They go so well together on my plate! tongue
