@sumi, you know that apple that you bite into and one eyebrow just automatically goes up 'cause they are a little on the tart side. that is what a jonathan is like. they are good for cooking, make great pies and some folks like eating them out of hand but i prefer a sweetly, spicy tartly apple but these are an old favorite around here and they were free. i have a big beautiful Maremma LGD named Katie who pretty much convinces all the predators to stay from up at the house. i must admit i worry a bit when the goats and sheep are out in the wild part of the property but so far so good. i lost her helper, Jasper about 3 months ago and am thinking about getting another LGD because it is so hard for them to do it all alone. first pix is of Katie and second of her as a pup with "uncle" jasper.
it was 102.2 in the shade in my backyard this afternoon. needless to say i didn't get much done outside today. got a couple of my saddles out of the storage building and got them cleaned up before it got horrible out. I've decided to sell or trade them because i am no longer able to ride for more than 20-30 mins before my back and hip are more than i can handle. I've spent 50 years of my life riding and to have to admit to myself that it isn't part of my future kinda bums me out. i try to remind myself that from the cradle to the grave our life evolves and changes but i still miss that feeling of freedom when its just you, your horse and the wind on the mountain, oh well.
So they're a bit like Granny Smith apples? I like eating those, but they are better for cooking.

Your dogs are beautiful! Sorry to hear about Jasper...

It sounds like it's as hot by you as by us. I don't like those days. It's just so horrible you can't do anything and when evening rolls round you're too drained to do anything!

I'm not allowed to ride horses due to a back injury, but I still do when I can. There is nothing quite like it, is there?

No there isn't. If I don't ride, I have problems w/my right leg. I was told by a neurologist to ride after I was in a car accident. I have L4, L5 nerve damage, and it affects my right leg. And while I'll never be 100%, I'm better now than I was B4 I started to ride.

I got told by an orthopaedic surgeon to STOP riding, period after I got hit by a car. I just said no way, no can do. Horses were a huge part of my life then. So he compromised and said no more jumping :( I used to jump, not competitively, but I loved it. I found if I'm careful when I ride I can get away with it. Falling off of course could get interesting, but I'll risk it.

i didn't have a problem staying in the middle of the horse, i just couldn't take the pain it caused. before i could and would ride all day. we used to camp with the horses for a week or two at a time, had hundreds of miles of mountain trails. those little arabs could keep going after others quit. loved to give a hard time to cowboy types.

youall won't believe what i did all afternoon. went thru my baker creek seed catalog looking for things to plant next year. is that nuts or what? i usually am so desperate for spring about jan. 1st that i save that guilty pleasure till then. i'm still harvesting this years garden but it was so hot outside again today that i just came in about 11 am and stayed in till it was time to go out to feed this evening. God planted a butternut squash outside my goat pen and it has several nice squash on it and since i have never grown winter squash before I'm not sure how to tell if they are ready to pick. crazy huh, I've always just grown summer types and have to fight the squash bugs for them but i really like different winter squash too so i thought why not check out the different kinds they have. and they have lots so now I'm sooo confused, i may have to try several just to see what i like best and thin down my selection to a few the year after that.

Oh man, now you'll have to wait even longer before planting your pretty new seeds! Probably start them indoors on Christmas Eve.....
