I'm trying to get the whole living off the land thing learned so I can go do it. I'm mother of 5 and dirt poor so some things are becoming necessity right now, like making soap from wood ash because I can't afford lye.

Over on the wet side. Much easier than the dry desert. We moved up here for a job and find the rain much easier to deal with than the heat

Hi there! I'm on the east side of the Cascades, in Klamath County. That was a concession on my husband's part since I need sunshine and there's a whole lot more of that over here than on your side of the state-- even in winter!
I hear you on the difficulty of doing things when you are poor-- we used to be middle class but we are slipping further and further below the poverty line.
I just recently learned how to judge the strength of your lye made from wood ashes by floating an egg; it's nice when you learn those handy little tips, isn't it? Now I need to figure out how to judge when my apple cider vinegar has reached and acidity of 5%...

Yeah, I need the sun too but I love the lush green forests as well. I can't seem to choose atm. And I like the that egg test too. I'm scared to death to do the vinegar. I'll have to build up my nerve on it :)
