I really would like to get off warfin! Last fall I went to E.R. thinking I was having relapse of diverticulitis. What the doc's found were blood clots on my lower lungs near my upper G.I. track.

Needless to say, I was very concerned. Only four months earlier I had a colonectmy, during which the G.I. doc removed several "very angry" polyps. This tissue was sent out for biopsy. First results were terrifying! Doc told me I had stage 1 colon cancer. Tissue samples were sent to both U.I. Chicago and Mayo Clinic. U.I. came back inconclusive. Mayo gave me all clear.

Since last October I've been on warfin to disolve clots on lungs and prevent any new ones. As it turns out a fatty tumor on one leg was the cause of all this. But doc's still want me on warfin even after cat scan says I'm all clear.

Agrrivating since was doing a high protein diet. My veggie intake was mainly most of the ones you can't eat while on warfin, like spinach, Brussels sprouts, ect.

I might not have clots, but I gained back 15lbs I'd previously lost. suggestions?

You could try talking to a more receptive doctor. Just because your doctor wants you to take this doesn't mean you HAVE to... it's your body, after all. I'm running into the same mind set over my cholesterol: I'm only 10 points away from normal, and I asked if I could get off the statins once I had a normal blood test. She said no, but when I asked her to explain why I had to take a drug with serious side effects for a condition I no longer had, she backed off and we agreed to a compromise: when I have a normal blood test I can stop taking the statins for 6 months; then we'll do another blood test and if it still looks good she'll let me stop them for good.

Still, you want to be very careful with clots... a friend of mine died from one that moved and got to her heart; she had stopped taking her medication because she couldn't afford it. She was only 35.

Yeah, I'm wondering about this doc. My late mother in law was on warfin. She had her blood levels checked every four weeks. This doc only checked mine once, last December! Was checked by surgeon right before I had tumor removed.

I'm also on simvistatin for cholesterol. I hate taking pills. So i watch how many eggs I eat. Use heart healthy oils to cook with. Eat foods with good omega oil ect.

This is why I wanna get back on my diet. Lost over 100lbs. I turn 50 in August 2015. Going by what I feel would be a good weight for my body, my goal is to hit between 210-220 by next year. Doin so will bring down cholesterol levels. I was also warned that I wa pre-diabetic. Not sure how much credit I give this assessment, since doc doesn't check warfin levels.

Oh the joys of obamacare and medicaid!

I believe it's been pretty well established now that eggs don't give you cholesterol even though they have it. The omega 3 oils are good for cholesterol (I take 2000mg of fish oil twice a day- it really helped me, but I've heard it can cause prostate cancer so you might want to find a different source). I've also been reading a lot of good things about putting saturated fats back into your diet, although it appears that things like coconut oil may be better than fat from meats- not sure about that though.

Sometimes you need to argue a bit with the doctor. When I finally had to start taking statin drugs for my cholesterol, my doctor indicated that she expected me to take them even after my cholesterol got down to normal. I asked her exactly WHY she thought it was a good idea for me to be taking a drug that has known dangerous side effects for a condition I no longer had. She relented and we agreed that when my cholesterol is normal I can stop taking it; with the proviso that in 6 months we test for cholesterol again. If it has climbed up again, I have to go back on the statins.

My sister is on cholesterol meds and hates the side affects. She talked to her doctor about stopping them and her doctor said "We have discussed this. When you loose the weight, then you will probably be able to get off the meds."
Poor sis, she has always hated vegetables, she is tied to a computer all day long and her hour commute twice a day does not help with losing weight.

Little changes may help, @wyoDreamer , if your sister switches to coconut oil for her Fat Of Choice, and drinking some ACV (with honey and lemon it's actually pretty good)... those could help her lose some weight without even trying. Slowly, but it would still be a downward trend.

Garlic. Daily intake of garlic....keeps your blood thin and also increases your health. Trust me...you won't clot. Mom and I bleed like crazy and takes awhile to get anything to actually form a clot enough to stop.

Also...drinking a lot of water helps. We don't drink much of anything else around here.
