I'm looking for ideas to reuse worn out men's wool hiking socks. I have a bunch of them and if there is something useful to do with them instead of throwing them in the trash it would be great.

Felt them and make wool bags to hold a bar of soap? The soap lasts a lot longer and the wool exfoliates skin.

I forgot to post that they are washable wool socks. If they haven't felted in the three years of me washing and drying them with jeans, I don't think I can make it happen. The process to make wool washable removes the outer scales on the hair.

I may stitch some of them together into a blanket for the outdoor (dumped) cat to sleep on.

If they just have worn areas on bottom and holes, why not darn them? Easy to do and will give new life to old socks.

Here's a pair I did, using an orange for my darning egg...sort of stretched out the toes a little but it wasn't permanent. This was my first attempt and, though I'm sure it's not perfect, I'm wearing this pair right now after using them last winter and this winter and there's no wear on the darned area at all. Still good! Still keeping my socks useable.

If you live in earthquake country, you can slip them over every other glass jar in your pantry- they will protect the jars from breakage caused by the jars slamming into each other in a trembler.
