Perception is different for all folks. Several of my "hippie" friends went to Vietnam and one dear friend did not come home. My own brother went and while he did return - he was a changed man. I try to let a person's actions speak for themselves and to stay away from categorizing folks if I don't know them personally.
The definition of pacifism is simply an opposition to war and violence. If that's wrong, then take your gun and go ahead and shoot me now.
By the way, I do own guns, and am opposed to gun control. Guess that makes me a gun-toting radical?After all, isn't every gun owner a contributor to the violence and senseless mayhem that guns bring about????? Or is it that guns don't kill - people do?
Still not offended by the posts, but I do enjoy raising questions.

i can not validate your gun ownership. we all make choices and must justify them to ourselves. i empathize with your brother and friends. there is no justification for the wars we wage.
ive only been here for a few days, so its probably best i keep my political and philosophical views to myself. if you want to chat about the highly unpopular opinions that swirl around in my mind and how i got to this place, im more than willing to share offline. id prefer not to spew them into an open forum.

i definitely hear you on that! some of our family like to stop in and comment about what we are doing at any given time, but have absolutely no idea how hard we working just to get what is done done

i havent had a chance to feel out the political climate here yet. you wanna chat doom and gloom, pm me.
Since we just do for ourselves in a small way I guess it's apples to oranges. The thread that binds us is the family not really understanding what goes into the country life. My brothers often ask me what I did over the weekend and the answer is usually that I was here doing this and that. We don't have a lifestyle that allows us to day trip, we have chores here that they just don't get.

Nah, I'd rather chat chickens, goats and gardens, lol! Or maybe water filters....I'm in the market for a good water filter and am a bit overwhelmed by the choices. I live on the coast and occasionally a great big hurricane blows through and we're without power for weeks. Just in case I didn't have gas for the generator and had to turn to the pond for water (ugh) I thought it might be wise to have a dependable filter on hand.

MSR makes a good one that screws onto their dromedary bags and bottles, but its just big enuf for drinking water. if youre piping it into your domestic supply, you want paper, charcoal, and uv sterilizer at least and slow sand and reverse osmosis or RO/DI if possible.

I haven't had any issues and I come from a farming family. It helps that several of the ones that don't actively farm and have land still do a few small things to sell usually. The ones who farm big hasn't been an issue as they've been converting over to organic farming on much of it to survive. I'm also in the Pacific Northwest so it's actually fairly easy to find many like minded people here.
