Taking the long view
There are colonies of clonal trees that have lived for tens of thousands of years, but there's something majestic about a single tree able to stand on its own for millennia. These ancient trees have borne witness to the rise and fall of civilizations, survived changing climates, and even persevered through the fervent development of human industry. They are a testament to the long view that Mother Nature takes in tending the Earth. With that in mind, consider the world's 10 oldest living trees.

That's a grand old tree.

I love history in the context of such things. Some 25 yrs ago my DH & I toured across the USA about 3 times, different routes, in an attempt to visit National Parks and see the things we had been told about waaaay back in high school days.

My life has been blessed in being able to see the canyons, deserts, mountain ranges, etc. in this Country. Some things are so amazing. I've walked up Mt Vesuvius, seen Pompey, Greek structures, etc. Grand Canyon & Yellowstone are my favorites -- & most awesome sights! Only wish today's kids could realize that the documentaries they see are real. Better yet, wish they could touch the land & appreciate it all.

I am green with envy; you have done so much traveling, something I have always dreamed of. As kids we didn't have the money to travel, and as an adult I still have too many responsibilities and still no money to put towards travel. I am watching Ken Burns" National Park series...again! Visiting a couple of those parks is on my basket list. Hope I can check them off before I go to the great homestead in the sky.

This year's theme for the Philadelphia Flower Show was based on our country's national parks. I so wanted to go but couldn't. They had people from the different parks there. I would have loved to have talked to them.

That's a beautiful tree! We have a few around here, scattered across the farmlands, that I love seeing as I walk. There is just something peaceful and beautiful about them…

Nice pics. I remember as a kid seeing a tree here or there in my grandfather's fields or along a fence line, and I always thought they looked "special".

I grew up in Baytown, TX . There is a "famous" tree standing on a main road in the middle of the original part of town. As a teenager, I couldn't tell you how many times I drove around that tree on a Friday/Saturday nights. It was at the end of the 'strip' where a lot of us kids drove up and down countless times on the weekends. Fond memory, but now seems kind of silly.

I love when they build roads around trees. There is a t-junction near here, on the way to Kilkenny city, where the minor road meets the big road, the road forks around a tree, close to the junction. In Castletownsend, Co Cork, there is a tree growing in the middle of the main road too…
