How many have actually made the change?

This is an interesting post I've been watching from the beginning, but I rarely have time to post replies. To answer the OP's question, I have lived on 1/3 acre in the city since the late 90s and I have not turned it into an urban homestead. It is not worth my time and money to do so, since I...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

As the calendar year comes to a close, I decided to look back at what I have done this year with respect to my SS stuff. Here's what I found in my journal: Edibles: ~I made a couple of batches of kombucha starting from a store-bought bottle ~I made ghee for the first time ~I made a lot of...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

No, I didn't say. We traveled to the rockies to visit friends over Thanksgiving, which was fun. It was the most relaxing Thanksgiving I've ever had, since my friend and the friend's mom did all the cooking and wouldn't let anyone help. We went skiing and played in the snow while we were there...

Cover crops and permanent rows~anyone doing them?

This is the second year I'm cover cropping with red clover and vetch, and this year I added fodder radishes. I don't do rows; I follow more of a "permaculture-style/mimicking nature" kind of gardening so I just scatter the seeds in the areas where nothing else is growing over winter. I will...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

I've been so busy with work and travel I haven't had time to post. Judging from the locked and farewell posts, perhaps that's a good thing. :/ The cover crops are sprouting, which is good since I planted them in the dark and I wasn't sure whether I did a decent job of scattering the seeds...

self sufficient parenting, keeping gov out of our homes

I am a parent, I only watched about half of it, but I was not bothered by it. I saw the sections about drug testing and the books brought home from school. Regarding drug testing, the kid had to give consent for his parents to see the results of the drug test. Why didn't they just ask the kid...

Over testing and assessment in public school

JMHO, but consider not opting her out of tests on a long-term basis. Like it or not, doing well on standardized tests is a critical skill for success in mainstream society. SAT or ACT scores greatly impact which colleges/universities will be available to a student, and beyond college/university...

Are You Ready To Make Due With Little Or No Gas.??

I got a Prius, since the gas mileage is so good (better than most--all?--other mainstream hybrids), and they have been around for a while and have proven themselves to be reliable. I have found that it's a pretty decent car for driving the kids to school and commuting into the city.

Random and intentional acts of kindness

Team Choaos, that is an awesome story. I came across this the other day and thought it would be good to mention here. It's something to think about for those of you with plenty of land. http://coldantlerfarm.blogspot.com/ I can't seem to make the link go to a particular post. The entry I'm...

Are You Ready To Make Due With Little Or No Gas.??

I think that is less true than in the past. There is a huge push for fully electric cars now (Prius electric, Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, etc.). But the most fun is my friend's fully electric Tesla Roadster -- that thing accelerates so fast it feels like a roller coaster. I heard that diesel...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

Made ghee yesterday for the first time. It was really simple and it tastes good (I sauted the pumpkin seeds in it with some natural seasoning salt -- yum!). Ghee (clarified butter) does not have casein, which the naturopath suggested I should avoid. I also happened to read yesterday that...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

I recently read a great story called Breaking Night by Liz Murray. It's a memoir by a woman who grew up in a home with drug-addicted parents living on welfare. She talks about her childhood, taking care of her parents, and the scary people they associated with. Her family fell apart and she...

Overpopulation...how does this set with you?

You can type in your birthdate here to see where you fall within the world population: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515 Here's what it tells me: The U.N. says 7 billion is not a problem; a larger percentage will live in cities and be a part of the workforce. Apparently there are...

    The Sustainable Seafood Myth

That link works. Thanks, MetalSmitten (love your etsy stuff - it's gorgeous!) Sustainable seafood is about what kinds of seafood you can eat without contributing to the massive overfishing problems facing marine ecosystems. There is some good information from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium about...

Our sweet pet rabbit Lucky died last week. She will be sorely missed by our family. The story of Lucky begins with our next-door neighbors and their cats, Peter and Kitten. Peter was a sweet old cat who loved our abandoned backyard before we moved in, and then he hung around with us after we...
