Has anyone here ever performed their own euthanasia on a sick chicken, that doesn't involve snapping its neck or a hatchet? I remember reading things on BYC but there being a lot of argument about it (antifreeze in a sealed container, or something similar). Anyone ideas? :/
My dad sent this to me yesterday...
You know you're a true MICHIGANDER when . . .
1. "Vacation" means going up north on I-75
2. You measure distance in hours.
3. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.
4. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

I have a chicken in a tractor today, & when I went out to check on her she hadn't touched her bowl of feed. I put in a cob of corn & she just ignored it. Highly unusual.
(WARNING: GRAPHIC, in case anyone is eating while reading this.) ;)
I bent down to pet her, & she opened her beak & a pretty...
Not sure I'm posting this in the right section, but oh well...:)
I bought a glass jar from a thrift store to store dehydrated veggies in. While washing, I noticed the plastic part of the glass top reaks of mint (like it previously contained Christmas peppermint candy). I've scrubbed with soap...
There is a recipe for "pickled 3 bean salad" in the Ball canning book that I'd like to try. HOWEVER...it includes Lima beans. :sick
I love 3 bean salad, but I always make it with red kidney beans. So, my question is, if I were to substitute kidneys, could I still use a WB canner? :fl
It's not quite 2pm EDT, & so far today I have made & canned a batch of bread & butter pickles from cukes from my garden; cooked a pizza in my home-made solar oven; & charged my cell phone using my new solar battery charger.
:woot :weee :bun
I need a quick tutorial on rechargeable batteries... ;)
I thought it might be prudent to switch most of my alkaline batteries to RB in my emergency storage, being that 1) a large package I bought leaked & had to be thrown out, so I have to get more anyway, and 2) I was thinking I might want to...
I had my ovaries & tubes removed last week (against my better judgement, but I was beaten down by 4 doctors & everyone in my family), so now I am dealing with the aftermath of "surgical menopause" & would welcome any/all advice on how to proceed. :)
My ob/gyn prescribed prometrium & premarin...
I posted a few days ago about my "red-butted" chicken, with lots of suggestions for different treatments (I got some zinc oxide, which I've used, & cod liver oil)...a local source suggested a de-wormer, which I put in the water today.
Well, I just went out to the pen, & it looks like one of my...
One of my chickens has lost all her feathers on her rear-end (around her vent)...not sure if she pulled them out herself (seems kind of a reach), whether one of the other hens did it, or there's something else going on. I have inspected for creepy-crawlies, but didn't see anything. The skin...
I've been very concerned about my hens, being this is the coldest winter we've ever had since I've lived here (7 years)...I mean, right now, at 8:30am it is only 19 *F.
Last year we rigged up a 250W heat lamp that hangs in the rafters over the roost, maybe we used it a dozen times last...
First, background: next month will mark 7 years in this house. The septic system was new (we were told) & our house was the first one to be hooked up to it, so I assume the tank was empty. There are 2 people in the home, but both of us are home all day, everyday, at least for the last couple of...
Hey ya'll, I have a problem with one of my hens...She has a bald patch on her lower neck (sorry, don't know the technical term), where I have suspected the other hens have been plucking out her feathers. I say "suspected" because I haven't actually witnessed this, & someone once told me she...
This is SO not fun - we have 10 1/2 inches of snow here...in NORTH CAROLINA...in the SOUTH...nowhere near the mountains, might I add!! :barnie It started spitting when we were leaving the in-laws last night about 10:30, luckily only 2 blocks down the street from us. When we woke up, 6" of the...
After my dismal failure with my lone apple tree - & being informed by members that I needed TWO apple trees for proper pollination - I wondered if I would need two trees if I wanted to try my hand at peaches...? My lone pear tree did fine. :D
Glenn Beck did a long segment on his TV show today regarding food storage (please, no flaming comments about him being a lunatic, etc)...as far as I know, he's the only well-known figure even talking about this. He talked alot about the price of corn going up, so by extension the price of LOTS...
Since manufacturing of incandescent (sp?) light bulbs will be phased out by 2012 (as I understand it), is anyone doing a little "hoarding" ;) of these while they're still on the shelves?
I noticed the local W/M has a tiny little shelf of incandescents, everything else is fluorescent.
I don't...
I wanted to start a separate thread on this, as it was mentioned in another posting as a method to keep butter without freezing it for long-term storage.
After doing searches on the web, I found the following methods:
After melting the butter in a pan on the stove, you...
1) Scoop off the foam...
