Coffee's Ready, Come and Sit on the Porch

I decided to pop on here for a minute this morning to report some sad news. Denim Deb's father died early this morning. I just thought some of you might like to pray for her.

    Today's eclipse...

LOL. I guess I have boring animals. But why am I not surprised? My hens won't go to bed until it is pitch black any day. They are all out wandering around in the yard after I want to go to bed. They also stand out in the pouring rain digging worms. Why on earth would something so trivial...

    My Daughter's New Etsy Shop

Howdy all. I just thought I would take a minute to share my daughter's new Etsy shop with you all. She is going to be making hand sewn dolls and other primitive type artwork. I think her little dolls are really cute. Some of them have yarn hair and others have rooted hair made from thread...

    Lost half the herd today

Look at your local tile shop or Habitat for Humanity for cheap marble remnants. A marble slab will pull heat away from the animal as well as give them someplace flat to sit which relieves hock issues on wire cage floors. Marble is also close grained so it won't absorb urine the way a masonry...

Mineral Supplements for Your Sheep and other Livestock

Here is a subject of great importance that is not often covered by most homesteading info. I thought a little video should be in order. I hope it helps some of you new to livestock

    Katahdin sheep

I raise Katahdin sheep and can't sing their praises enough. I have a lot of information about them on YouTube. My channel is Thunder Ridge Homestead https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSszsnCNuz0fFUinYBLX4Yg This is my latest video about how and why I halter break my lambs that I am...

    My Pastured Poultry Pen Project

They are Cornish pullets (except for three of them). Half of them are Red Laced White and the other half are Buff. The three exceptions are two standard Buff Cochins and one Buff Cornish cockerel. They are a little over 2 months old.

Denim Deb Hay, hay, hay. Thank the Lord!

I am a good spitter. Before we moved in 2013 back to my childhood house we were surrounded by neighbors so close I could stand in the backyard - spit - and hit three houses. Now we are on a busy highway and still have neighbors much too close on two sides, but I can at least breath a little...

    Ticks!

This fall you should fence the garden in and move the chickens in for the winter. That will clear out the infestation. Maybe you could even run a chicken tractor in there during the growing season?

    Ticks!

If the information can help one other person, then the ordeal was worth it. Pass the info on too, to anyone that will listen. It is something simple that can possibly save a life. And yes, it was a terrifying time. I watched a strong healthy guy that was biking 20 to 30 miles in a weekend...

    Ticks!

Time once again for my Tick Safety and Awareness Rant. I for one DO think a lot about those stupid ticks. Ever since hubby spent almost two months so ill that he almost died from a tick born disease I have really realized just HOW dangerous those ticks can be. The tick born illness that My...

    Daydreaming while waiting impatiently!

The Cornish are sassy, but they are quite friendly at least. The majority of my flock are the Dark Cornish, but I also have some Dominiques and a few Marans and one Wyandotte. They all love my grandson the "Kid". Too fun!

    How are you an expert?

Just pick a spot and get started. Learn one task and learn to do it well then pick a different skill. Step by step you will get more and more handy at tasks. That is how I learned. When we first got married we lived in a one bedroom town home with only a tiny patch of earth on the side...

    Daydreaming while waiting impatiently!

First time I had the buff or red laced Cornish, but so far they are still full of sass. They are game birds after all.

    How are you an expert?

Rams are like roosters. They should NEVER be pets. When a ram is petted (especially on the head) and loved on it fixes in his brain that he is equal to the human. When he becomes an adult he uses the ways of sheepdom to exhibit his breeding dominance which results in the dangerous behavior...
