I'm glad that you took a step back, took another look at things and you are ok now. I firmly believe that when things go awry, it's because something is not "right" at that time. It is immediately obvious that things are not right for Gary. What is not obvious is what is not right for you. You don't have a good fence, and were about to throw up a fence. You were in a rush, so now you can take a deep breath and build a good fence. Do it and do it right.

Yes @farmerjan you do deserve the accolades and much more. You are a wealth of information and good hearted to take your time to share with others. :bow

You know Gary tried to talk me into taking all 4. He said they are wire trained, he has them on pasture with a single electric wire and he said it wouldn't take nothing to put up a wire. He right, but I still wasn't comfortable. I didn't start feeling sad until after he left. I know this sad feeling all to well, I know I'm trying to be taught something, when I get the feeling. Most of the time, I just don't know what I'm gonna learn. Just like buying this place, same feeling... And we ended up with the place for far less than the asking price. I'm not supposed to have these cattle, why I don't know... but I now know, I'm not supposed to.

Long story short...
I have a buddy who's name is Dale. Dale owns a tree service and he is one talented dude when it comes to taking down trees around peoples houses and buildings. I've helped him a little and I've never seen a guy take a rope put it in a crotch section of a tree tie it to a huge lower limb, cut the limb and have it swing over a trailer. Then he tugs the other end of the rope the knot comes loose the the limb falls into the trailer. It's amazing to watch this guy work on a tree.

The very first time I met Gary, I noticed this tree and said Gary that tree scares me but with the wind we have around here it's an accident just waiting to happen. Gary said he had a tree service scheduled to come take it down. I said ok good I mean his ducks were laying eggs in the trunk. The second time I was at Gary's the tree was still standing. Gary said the tree service said they would get to it when they can. The third time I was at Gary's yep tree still standing. Gary said he called the tree service and got some snarky response from the girl who was taking the phone calls.

That's when I mentioned my buddy Dale and that he's bonded and insured. So if he messes up your covered. I texted Dale and he was out to take the tree down within a week. Gary said he climbed that tree like a monkey, chainsaw and rope hanging from his belt and had it all down within a couple of hours. I said the guy is good isn't he? Gary said the exact same thing I did about the rope and swinging branches and how he never seen anyone do that before. Dale's charge $450.00, Gary's quote from the other tree service $1500.00. Gary said he paid Dale $500.00, because Dale wouldn't take anymore since I was his friend. I said did you offer him a beer? Gary said darn straight I did. I said good, he likes a beer when he's done taking a big one down and there's nothing wrong with that.

Here's the maple tree, now you know why it scared me.

His house and three out buildings all within falling distance. I guess they moved the thermometer and swing.

Yep, sometimes it is just not meant to be. There is always a reason, even if sometimes you don't know what it is.

What you did for Gary on the tree was a god thing. You are a good man, a man who cares about his friends and neighbors.

Great about your friend doing the job for Gary. Yep, that tree was a "waiting to happen" problem.....

Hope that things go better for Gary, selling the cows and the health difficulties. You'll get cows when the time is right.

I found another pond. It's actually the feeder pond for the big pond. It's pretty small and I could easily plug it up by building a small dike between the two ponds. I'm left wondering what to do with it? I could fence it in for ducks, I could grow minnows or shiners to sell to local bait stores. Or what else???

I need help...
got pictures? measurements?

Approximately 136 paces around, my paces are about 3', so about 408 foot around. It's a good 10 deep.

About 1/2 of it.

Here's where it feeds the bigger pond. I could easily build a dike between the two and maintain a consistent depth in this little pond.

If you dam the little pond, won't that adversely affect the bigger pond? What would happen if you trenched out the feeder pond? When I was a kid, we had the same situation at the back of our property, but on a much smaller scale than what you have. the first pond was actually a spring, about 3' deep and with crystal clear water, ice cold. The second pond was about 30' diameter, and I have no idea how deep it was in the middle, but shallow enough to slog around with rain boots at the front perimeter. Perhaps your front feeder is a spring? And if you dug it out, you would have a good clean water source?

Wouldn't that be cool. I'll have to check it out. I could raise the level of the smaller pond buy burying a length of pipe between the 2 pond and closing the dike. It would be pretty simple actually.
