Coffee's Ready, Come and Sit on the Porch

Seeds can survive a lot. Think every year this plant seeds out, then dies, then killing frost, then next spring with a little daylight and warm weather (which thankfully we are having) they sprout.

I'm going to say those just didn't germinate. Hypothesis only. I set out rye seed in various places this fall with some coming up a month later than others and looking at seed on the ground that I'm hoping germinates later.

I've also seen gardens replanted because something didn't germinate, then after another planting both came up.

Frustrating!

Were they not properly ripe, or for whatever reason didn't store right?

i think a lot of them were not fully developed. they may have frozen in the garage before i brought them inside and we don't have great storage space inside either. i noticed one of the larger ones looking like it was rotting the other day so i decided i better go through them all today and tomorrow and get them processed and into the freezer. so they're all gone now.

my other mistake was trying to grow out some seeds from squash that i didn't know for sure was edible and all good. turns out almost all of what i had in that pile were likely from the same or similar plants and they weren't good at all. one of them even had seeds sprouting inside it (which i'd never seen before). they were all green to very pale yellow and smelled rancid and/moldy and the flesh wasn't really firm either but more stringy, but most of what put me off was the smell. just not what i wanted or expected.

we also had deer feeding a lot more on the squash and trampling things.

given how big those squash were i was hoping they were as good as the one i took the seeds from. nope. to do experimental squash grow outs i need a lot more space and then also to have it fenced.

But you can enjoy your bean seeds instead.🥰. I was looking on the bean thread in sister garden site today and some in the pictures were beautiful!! I especially liked some purple ones and several of the brown/white with design. 👍

One year I harvested a huge amount of onions... I set then out to dry where I THOUGHT they were protected from freezing, and I was wrong.

Disappointing... but at least we learn.

Grand daughters and favorite daughter in law stayed for dinner. Farm babe, favorite daughter in law and grand daughters fixed dinner. I stepped into the kitchen to check on progress and farm babe pointed her finger at me and said "You! - get out of my kitchen!" What was I to do? I was out numbered 4 to 1 😂

It's supposed to be Toco Tuesday, but according to my granddaughter it's now "Terrific Tuesday" because they made "cow steak" enchiladas.

Grand daughter sure does like cow steak. She eat 2 1/2 big enchiladas 😳 it was all I could do to pack down two.

Prepare yourself... it's Wacky Wednesday tomorrow. - just sayin'

In 3 days Reina will be here one month. This morning some time after I fed her, I went to get her with halter and lead rope. Ears up, she came right to me. I took her down the driveway and let her graze. I finally got the last mat out of her mane. She had several of those and this was the biggest one. I pulled 3-6 hairs out at a time. Been working on it a little here and there, today was the day.

This is Reina Day 1

Reina today at 1 month. I’ve just about got her switched over to the Nutrena Performance feed, another week and she will be completely on it. She gets 2 pounds twice a day. Over several weeks I’ll bring her up to 3 pounds twice a day until she is in good condition, healthy and shiny.

The vet said to bring her up slowly. She didn’t lose that weight all at once, so don’t try to put it back all at once. Good advice. I finally wormed her last week. I noticed she was walking with her tail held up, not high, just up. She had been letting it lay flat. I took that as a sign that she was feeling better, stronger, so I wormed her. I wanted to feed her for awhile before I wormed her.

She's gonna be a stunning horse when you bring her back to the proper weight. She's already beautiful, thanks for posting an update. I just don't understand how such a beautiful animal, could be in a kill pen to begin with.

Yep, good advice from the vet. Horses need slow feed changes.

Mom went to the endocrinologist today for her diabetic appointment. Took 6 dozen cookies and a couple gallon bags of caramels to the staff. She has to be their favorite patient. She said the office staff was sneaking into the back to eat them so all the diabetics in the waiting room wouldn't see them eating cookies.
