Mysterious chick loses

new brooder done. chicks were supposed to have shipped today. hopefully all goes well. the hateful 8 are still in the rabbit cage

more chicks came in. no more losses in the brooder yet. we have had some heavy loses in the grow out pen. the 8 i put out there have dropped to two. seems our new dog and possibly a small wild animal are to blame. working with the dog and working in the grow out pen. its tough but im not gonna lose.

Predatory behavior cannot be suppressed, it must be redirected. The need to express predatory behavior must be met in an acceptable way.

Redirection is very effective - just think of how border collies arrest predatory behavior sequence at eye or stalk, or how catch dogs stop the predatory sequence at grab-bite.

Punishment just makes them avoid *getting caught.* There's a great little book on predation substitute training called Hunting Together by Simone Mueller. It works!
