Maybe its a bit of a specific thing to Oregon and Washington. Used to be you had to make your own out of PVC then a company started making metal ones. Soon tons of cheaper aluminum ones were available everywhere. Tube can be no larger around than 4 inches by regulations. Get less wet and sandy than using a clam shovel. Also much quicker which is needed as razor clams dig fast

Tube you shove into the ground around the clam sign. Once it's a foot or 2 in you put finger on air vent to make a suction and pull the sand out. Check hole for clam in case it was farther down. They are very noticeable when they are digging away. Then release sand and check it for the clam.

Looks like a sniper clam gun to me.

Don't you use clam guns up there for razor clams? Quicker and easier than a shovel. I know Alaska gets bigger clams than we do as a friend used to dig them up there.

Ah... most up here use a shovel. Or at least, last time I went I used a shovel.

Maybe because the beaches here have lots of rock and gravel?
