What did you do to save $ today?

Tankshill, the one I had was a deeper orange but otherwise looked identical. It was the meatiest one I have ever cooked. I read were several of the ones with the deep lobed shape were listed as good for cooking. Hope my seeds come up and that it is not a hybrid that looks like the heirloom...

What did you do to save $ today?

I cooked my $5 pumpkin that I bought at the farmer's market. I had never used that kind before but the guy said it was good for pies and I vaguely remembered having seen an ariticle about pie pumpkins that pictured a dark orange pumpkin. He called it a Cinderella pumpkin. I got 10 cups + 5...

    Corn-y questions, help please......

keljonma, I tried dehydrating sweet corn last year and some of it turned out great. The rest turned brown using my dehydrator. It is possible it was over done, but I don't think so because the same tray would have the brown and the yellow. Any ideas as to what I did wrong or how to do it...

    Corn-y questions, help please......

I always freeze corn on the cob in the shuck. I trim ends and remove a few of the outer shucks then put it in a freezer bag. It lasts just as long as shucked and blanched for me. I leave mine in the shuck and microwave it but you can also roast or grill it. It tastes closer to summer fresh...

Almond Butter...not the kind you eat....

Gallina's information really helps. It should be easy to put into soap and you can sub. = amt almond butter for the crisco in your recipe. I would use a lower % the first time to see how it does.

    Can you actually eat crow?

In defense of crows, they do help scare off hawks which is nice if you raise chickens. My dad grew up during the depression in a large family. He tells a story about fixing up a trap with a board propped on a stick with a string attached so they could kill snow birds to eat. Broke my heart...

Almond Butter...not the kind you eat....

I just looked in The Soapmaker's Companion and Milk-Based Soaps and they only talk about Almond oil. I am rather certain it would be nice in a lotion or cream. I think you could probably add it to soap but you need to take away from another oil if you do. On the other hand does it have...

    Learning to sew without patterns

Sewing can be very rewarding and just plain fun but in the present day and age as someone else said it is not cost effective. Here are some things I would suggest to make it more cost effective. 1. Get on the mailing list for a fabric store and try to take advantage of big sales. Our local...

I was out of buttermilk one night when I wanted to make biscuits so I added some sour dough starter for the tang. They turned out great but the + side was they were still tasty and moist 2-3 days later. Here is a recipe for ginger bread: It is from SIMPLY SOURDOUGH -The Alaskan Way- by Kathy...

    Diabetic Pasta Recipe Like Dreamfields?

I don't have a recipe and am not sure what Dreamfields is like so I probably should not even answer. However if you add a veggie with a low glycemic index and use whole grains it will lower the glycemic index for the whole batch.

Any one else from the great state of Tennessee?

They have some farmers markets and farms in the surrounding area that sell produce in season in the Clarksville area. It is getting end of season for a lot of veggies but some are still available. For example I slice and freeze peppers for use in the winter and they are still available as is...

Can you freeze corn before you can it?

I freeze corn on the cob with the shuck on it and it tastes incredibly fresh. I cut ends and peel off outer husk only. I have never tried freezing and then canning it but this is a real time saver and it can be cut off after thawing slightly. I don't know if it will help you or not.

    Is canning veggies cost effective?

Once you have the initial outlay of equipment and if you are able to raise the veggies yourself yes it is cost effective to can unless you make an excellent wage and have to take off work to do it. I like the fact that with a shelf full of canned food I can fix a meal in a matter of minutes...
