We have a small woodstove and I'm hoping to use it for cooking some this winter. However I am worried about messing up the surface over time. Is there something I can put on the surface to protect it? (Such as a piece of slate tile, etc?)

Its one of my favorite all time books. While we dont live that extreme, its a good reminder than people can be quite resourceful if they just put their mind to it... and happiness can be found in the simplest places if you just look for it.

We have a 55 gallon barrel that has about a 6 inch crack on the bottom. We've tried patching it but it still leaks so we're retiring it as a rain barrel. (It previously caught water from the barn roof for our horses)
The barrel is heavy red/brown plastic, does not have a lid, and does not hold...
