I have a bunch of peas that are ripe now. From what I have been reading you can either leave them on the vine and let them dry on the vine or you can pick them, allowing more to grow, then dry and shell them. So, the first bunch of peas that were ripe (just a hand full) I picked and dried. I shelled them today and for the most part they are all shriveled up and not eatable. Should I pick them and shell them right away or did I let them dry too long? I don't know what to do because now I am nervous about letting the rest of them dry on the vine. HELP!!!! :hit

Sounds like they may have dried for too long. Louisiana is hot...maybe that kind of heat was too much.

Is you plan to store them? I usually eat the ones that are ready, and then let the rest dry on the vine- to use as seed for the next crop...

OK, so only let them dry on the vine if I want to use them as seed for next season? That must be where the misunderstanding was. So, if I am going to freeze them, should I pick them and shell them right away? Do I need to blanch them like with green beans?

If it's snap peas (sweet peas?) they can be eaten fresh. Snow peas can be eaten fresh too. My husband likes them as a snack, just raw. Otherwise, I'd blanch them VERY gently in just hot water, and freeze them for storage.
That's what I'll do. Thanks :)
