But I was quite naive to think I could just get a radio! That must come from trucker dad and the cb- anyone can play on one! But I will say having military trained, prepared people and those self sufficient at my disposal will be well more valuable than any costs when our great government fails us! Glad you have this idea already stirring with people, we will all benefit from it!

Hello Elizabeth in Mannford, OK. It is nice to have you with us here. please see my other post here edjanuary39. Much of what you would like to know can be found at the ARRL website and from folks who work with HAM radios. You can take the test from studying just the questions in the back of the book because they are all there.

You don't have to learn morse code but it is fun and can be very useful. don't worry about rot 13 for now.

You want to learn the basics first.
HAM radio does not use "channels" but we use frequency because there are so many of them. Channels are found on the CB and family radio bands. We have a wider band choice than that.

The important part of this is that radio will provide communication between folks with radios and we won't have to depend on a big system to communicate. Our radios do the work and are independent.

As for emergency communications, we can discuss which frequency to use once we have figured out which of our friends here are interested and can get up on the airwaves.
We sure want to encourage you to work with us because I am still of the opinion that the time is relatively short. YMMV

sorry I get distracted and forgot to go back to that site. I agree 100% that it will be our only source of communication, our government has made too many bad decisions and we are going to take the fall. I feel we will be in an 'book of Eli' scenario, not the bible aspect, but the way life is way. The sooner we establish communication, the sooner we can begin living and stop surviving. One person can't know everything, so sharing our talents and ideas we will be able to rebuild some type of basic community life. Thanks again! Just to add something, we need to stockpile resource books, particularly ones that describe medical, garden, holistic medicine, clean water resources, maybe power generation, livestock, building, mostly stuff back in the 19th century would probably be most helpful.

Hmmm Book of Eli. Yes, I agree. I tried posting a thread to make a list of books like that and it didn't last very long. Many folks still just don't believe it can happen.
I know a guy who put a 1000 books on a CD to preserve that knowledge. I still don't have a copy of that disc.
If I can get it, I'll tell folks here.

I just typed a whole bunch and lost it! Err! Anyway, yes that will be very valuable, but print will be better as we won't be able to access the info as easily, unless you have power, but without paper or ink, you will have chance of losing it if your computer crashes or the disk gets scratched badly. But I was typing about Katrina, look how they reacted! They had food, water, shelter, medical and they still turned on each other! We won't have a military presence when our gov. falls. We will not have the redcross taking care of the injured. But once we kill abunch off, and I do believe we will be put into many situations where we will be forced to kill or be killed- we will all calm down and reestablish ourselves, so much knowledge will be necessary to avoid the mistakes of our forefathers. And books on politics and history will be very important to make better choices than in the past. We will need to continue the education of our children, but in a different way, as much of what we have learned will become pretty useless for a long time!
