Hi Snapshot! Thanks for the welcome! I actually have not been to Quartzsite that I know of. When I was very young we took a family vacation to Garden of the Gods and the petrified forest? I know eventually we ended up at Pike's Peak. Is Quartzsite on the way to any of those places if you start from Indio, CA on Interstate 10? I think I would really like to get to Sedona someday. Have you been there?

You wouldn't know you went through it if it was summer. It is on I-10 at exit 17. Not far past Blythe, CA-- about 20 miles. Busy place in the winter with the huge rock and mineral shows and the great weather!

I would love to back to the South Pacific, but unfortunately I need to stay in the States for medical reasons. But it was wonderful while it lasted!!

It's a cool, cloudy and windy day here. I can't wait for Spring/Summer!!

I'm sitting here reading hqueen's journal (very interesting, BTW) and all of a sudden the chickens start making a huge ruckus. I go to the window and look out at the run and there is a coyote standing about 10 ft beyond the run. Mind you, it's 10:00 am! Very rare to see a coyote so close to the house after sunrise. I ran out the door so fast, I nearly broke the screen door! I'm pretty confident that no predator can get in the coops or run, but it still made my heart pound seeing that coyote so close and in broad daylight! He must have heard me crash into the screen door, because he was already 50 yds away by the time I got to the run. I needed a little excitement this morning!!!

It's doggone cold in this house this morning!! I need to get up and bake something!! I have a nice recipe for a 4 egg yellow cake, but of course I use 5 eggs!! I hope the girls give me at least 3 eggs today or I won't be able to make broccoli, bacon and cheese quiche I planned for dinner.

I'm preheating the oven now...

Hello cheerio!! Thought to peek in to your journal. It is so nice to be able to learn from such a wide variety of people scattered everywhere!

I completely understand about the coyotes and hens. A couple years ago I glanced out a window and saw all my little flock of hens just plastered against the side of the house. Maybe 30' away, were several very skinny coyotes, staring at them, staring at me through the window. I took off running, hollering (okay cussing and screaming like a banchee) and DH was yelling at the same time for me to stay in the house. I don't know what I thought I was going to do, but my presence was enough to get the coyotes running. This too, was before noon.

Cold in your house? What, 68? The quiche sounds really good, maybe I'll make one tomorrow.

HA HA!! 68 would have been nice! Todays high according to the old thermometer on the porch was 52. Now, before you think I'm some kind of wimp, let me explain...

The bedroom addition that we just added has no insulation or drywall yet. It is just framed with the vapor barrier and siding up and only the sheathing for the roof. Overnight the temp dropped to 30. We only have a space heater and the oven to heat the house right now, and I refuse to leave either one on while we sleep. So, it was just a little chilly when I rolled out of bed to take the dog out at 5:45 this am. Brrrrrrr! :/

And the quiche will have to wait 'til tomorrow. Not enough eggs! So it's chicken and rice tonight. But we have a gorgeous yellow cake for dessert!!! Yum!!!

OH holy cow! Now I understand! We didn't have drywall hung when we moved in here, except for the family room where we slept and lived. We did have insulation all over the house and tons of plastic stapled up, closing off rooms and on the outside walls. Brrrr. We did have three space heaters that were on constantly (it was the middle of Jan when we moved in here), thank God it was a mild winter.

Can't you sleep in another part of the house until you get the bedroom a little further along?

If it get's any colder this winter, that is exactly what we'll do. For now we just throw a couple extra blankets on the bed and dress in layers.

BTW, I have been reading your blog. Your place sounds like a slice of heaven. I especially like the story about the Scarecrow and that peacock is something else! And from what I can tell, you are not a wimp! Have a great weekend!
