there are some smaller ones in that pic that may pass. I don't remember the legs having the hair on them, but maybe they are young. The orange~y brown is slightly different, but for now, I am going to say that is thee closest to my insect. They are definitely more "ugly" as they age .... . Now, tomorrow, I will be eradicating them as best I can. Boric acid is used frequently on other insects that I have seen....

Oh how did I get these!!! My first post mentioned 50 pound potato bags and old boxes of canning jars.... from this? Could they have been here while the house was empty of people for 2 ~ 4 years?

My guess would be from the boxes you brought in, or the potatoes. The ones in the link I had were from wood roaches, and they don't live in the house. But, they're similar in appearance to other cockroaches, and that was the best pic I could find. It's not unusual to bring them in from someplace else. I've heard of people opening bags of dog food, potatoes, etc and have the roaches just pour out of them. The ones you're seeing are the immature ones, or instar stage. That's why you're not seeing wings and are able to see the segments. The lack of wings and the segmented body are what made me suspect some type of roach.

thats what we call waterbugs in south carolina....but i have never seen them near water...

I will be happy to call them SC waterbugs and not the CR that they could be. ....

by the 'looks' of it sounds like one of my hubby's cousins

To me it does look like a species of Cockroach. I found a couple of links that show lots of different species of them. One site shows the different life stages of each, they do look different when young and fully grown. From pictures, it looks to me like it's exactly like the pictures of younger Pennsylvania wood roaches. I've only seen one "wild" one before... They freak me out so badly that I get chills just looking at the pictures. :/

Yes it looks like a wood roach. They like to hang out in firewood piles and deep leaf litter. I have only seen one in the house- dead- in the bark scraps where we put the firewood next to the stove. They don't generally live long in the house if they do find their way in there, but I would clean up crumbs and whatnot, and rinse dishes if you're going to leave them til the next day. You can get rid of mulch that is directly next to the house, they like any decomposing woody material. They most likely came in from outside. And if you see it in the daytime and they don't run away, they are most likely wood roaches.

I was painting a bunch of trim outside, and the next few days were going to be rainy so I stacked and covered the trim boards with a tarp. When I removed the tarp, loads of these things in all different colors were scattering in all directions. I'm so glad that they are mainly an outdoor critter.
