It's been about 30 each morning for past several days and mid 50 to mid 60 days. This AM it was 65 and now a front will slide thru and bring lower temps by nightfall. I still have some cool weather grasses and weeds growing but, spotty. Of course, the manure piles are still fresh & available, that's one thing that grows all year. LOL

It is a recycling thing -- manure piles -- as some feed going thru comes out as "unused" and the chickens then use it.

Seems the chickens are happiest running on my wood chips garden. They turned their noses up at the laying pellets and went right to the garden this morning

Well, I'm with @NH Homesteader . I feed very little in the summer, but it's a must in the winter. If there's good foraging the birds leave the feed alone anyway, so I just make adjustments based on the flock needs as they change through the seasons.

500 will be a good size flock!
