I wash my hands frequently but I don't use antibacterial soap, I'm a dishwashing liquid (palmolive) hand washer. I do however use antibacterial bar soap when I shower.

I use hand sanitizer, my kid was hospitalized last year, I'll gladly kill the germs for her. But the infection my husband got was from a wound from a chicken who obviously had nasty stuff on him. It wasn't my husband's skin that failed him, it was the dirty chicken!

And, tonight I grabbed a rooster and stabbed a hole in myself on his spur. Wasn't HIS fault. I squeezed and squeezed and squeezed it so it would bleed good since I was outside and not near soap and water. As soon as I came in I did wash with antibacterial soap and used hand sanitizer too. Then iodine and triple antibiotic. Chicken feet are N.A.S.T.Y!

Night time. Check the nest at night when that broody is half asleep. I have a couple who are pretty aggressive, some only coo & growl with ruffled feathers.

Ahhhh, nasty roos. I wanted to catch one and did so while he was "busy" fighting with another. Yep, small cut but, I bleed profusely so...was good until I got to an alcohol wipe & band aid in the barn. Rooster is peened & "waiting" for his day.

We avoid buying antibacterial soaps here but that's getting harder and harder to do. It seems, the more antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers came on the market, the sicker the general population became.

Looks like my hens are coming back on line finally. The farm store finally got some oyster shell in I loaded up the oyster shell section in the their drop box feeder Friday morning. Today I threw my hunting dog a pop egg (he gets the worst everyday) and even he had trouble cracking the shell. Oyster shell doesn't work that fast does it (4 days)?

Not likely, but you never know. Were they still thin and brittle 4 days ago but now they are not?

That's right... I also switched them for 16% layer to 18% all flock early last week so maybe that's it?

Not in my opinion. I think it was just time. Their shell glands have to work out the kinks a bit when they restart a laying cycle and it may take a couple of weeks, but it eventually happens and the shells firm up without any help at all.

By the time someone implements all the advice from people online, it's about the same time the issue was resolving itself anyway. ;)

Sort of like when a doc gives an antibiotic for a cold. When the course of antibiotics is done is about the same time the cold would have resolved itself anyway, so it looks like the antibiotics worked... but doctors know they won't work on a cold virus...they just give them because it seems like they've done something to help the patient. Got that straight from the horse's mouth. :D
