Not really a quote, but a brief story that I think self sufficient folks will enjoy and may make them smile like it did me.

I've been trying to sell some buckskin since deer season (and after it closed) and finally got a call. The man said it was his son wanting it- I expected he meant a middle aged son who was into making wallets or something to be honest. We pulled up to meet them and if it wasn't a little barefoot boy about 7 years old or so. His father said he had been wanting to make some buckskin pants, and remarked he was happy with how the buckskin looked. As I was talking about the process, that young man picked up the hides in his hands and put it to his nose, then excitedly said, "You can smell it too!" He was referring to the smell almost similar to barbecue that the hides have after smoking. He looked over the bit we had and was constantly remarking how much he liked them, and we worked out a fair deal so he could get two nice sized pieces to make his buckskin pants. I was tickled to see that little kid so excited to pick out the buckskin and appreciate it- and to be passionate enough to want to make his own clothing from it. It gives me a joyous feeling to know there's someone like this young man who wants to not only know about traditional skills, but wants to get hands on and make this. It was such a sweet moment!

Not only is it great that the little man wanted to make himself some buckskin pants, but that his dad was willing to drive him over and buy the buckskin.

To many times when I wanted to do something I was told no. I had saved up the money to by a backpack and the girlscout catalog had one I wanted. Dad said no - you don't need it. Stubborn, hard-headed little me saved up some more money, rode my bike to town and went to the post office. I bought a money order and sent in my order. I made sure that I got the mail for the next 2 months until the dang thing showed up, then sneak it into the house and hide it in my closet. Any time I used it, I would sneak it out of the house in a paper bag until out of sight of the house. I wonder if my parents ever knew I bought that backpack...

Wow! Way to squelch a kid.
