I never had any luck with these, but I always tried to transplant some into my garden. Now I can't even find them on my property. I know critters like to eat them.

Eek - I just saw this when I was looking for a pic to post. They're talking about the ground cherries poisoning your horses:

Ground Cherry is in the same family as deadly nightshade and belladonna. Although it contains many of the same compounds, they are at somewhat lower concentrations.

Cape Gooseberries! :) I didn't know they were called Ground Cherries too. In Afrikaans they are called Appeliefie (Translation: Appel - Apple; Liefie - Lovey) Such a cute name!

We had loads of them in South Africa and the make the most heavenly jams/jellies :drool They are also very good to eat fresh. I found some in a supermarket last year and dried some seeds from one of the berries to try and grow here.

That's unfortunate about the horses, I had no idea...tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers are nightshade vegetables too. I do know that some people with certain health issues are sensitive to these veggies as well.

I've grown ground cherries, and the feral pigs that got into my garden did love them...but we harvested A LOT from two plants and I made a salsa with them and peaches, onions, and jalapenos that was pretty good.

They are perennial in my zone (9) too, which was one of the reasons I got them.
