    First Snake Tanning

We've eaten rattlesnake multiple times and my husband has tanned several skins. When he was a kid, he lived in Texas, and used to hunt rattlesnakes and turn them in to the boot makers. It was good money for a Texas kid. Later when he was in the military, he'd catch and skin some and grill them...

    I Am A Seed Hoarder

Sooooo, @baymule how did you do this year using up all those seeds?? I have lots that never got planted. The spring was waaaaaay too wet, and then it was too hot for a spring garden. So those seeds were kept for a fall garden but it was in the 100 degree range right up into October, then we had...

    pizza sausage and similar

When you lived "up north" where was it? Sometimes it helps to know a region. And my husband says if it is a specific sausage in Kansas City, no one has been able to quite duplicate it. He said if it's "the one" from there, he knows just the one you are talking about. My husband and oldest...

    junk pole fence

I like your fence. I've been eyeing a stand of bamboo near our church that is always overgrown. It would be great for a fence like that. Might be a project for next spring. I had wondered why you wore such a long coat to build your fence. Itmade more sense at the end of the video! Welcome (back)...

    rodeogirl's journey to being self-sufficient

It does tend to be hard to "go back to breast feeding". It's an entirely different way of moving the mouth for the baby, so it can be difficult for her to switch from one kind of feeding to the other. But she's still getting the benefits, and it's certainly nice for Daddy to be able to feed her...

    Hi from New Zealand

It will be nice hearing about your garden growing while ours are at the end of our year. I've got the last of my peppers to pull in tonight, and house plants to move inside. We're expecting a killer frost tonight.

cosmos, an easy annual late summer bee forage

Yes, oregano is in the mint family. We have both growing here also. I need to do a study on what's native to here, since I've only been here 2 1/2 years (we've had the property 3 years.) We have the same goal as you regarding having things blooming as early and as long as possible with a great...

    A2A2 milk

Ah, here I go again... Off on another rabbit trail! I'm clueless as to what A2A2 milk is, so I'll have to go do some researching. I DO like Jerseys, and it's been a hope of mine for quite a while to get one of my own. As far as I can tell, A2A2 is an extra protein? I've been reading up a lot...

cosmos, an easy annual late summer bee forage

@flowerbug will cosmos reseed themselves? I had forgotten about cosmos, and I'm glad you brought it up. When we first bought this property, bees were high on our list, and we've been trying to add more bee friendly plants every year. We want to start our own hive, but we want to make sure there...

    Hi from New Zealand

Welcome from Alabama. I don't remember anyone mentioning that we love pictures! :D I'm hoping you'll share more on your beekeeping. We've been planning on adding bees for a while now. Maybe this spring now that my husband will be retiring. I hope what you're able to plant and grow translates...

Official Poll: What are the products that you make/produce at home?

@flowerbug , we make our own compost and fertilizer and worm beds too. The year before last, we found an ad advertising free 2 year old hay. It was over 30 of the big round bales, some already starting to break down. We brought back every bale he had and used it all over the property. I made...
