Oh, good to know. So the meat wasn't tough and stringy?
I figured I could at least get good broth from a roo, but I didn't know how good the meat would be.
So, you got me expanding a Craigslist search, and I found one near me for goat's milk. I'm nearly dancing in my seat! :weee

Thanks for the idea for check CL. :bow I didn't really think it possible to find that easy or that close.
I have a lot of roos running around my place right now from just a few weeks old to one that is 2 years old.
I have 5 or 6 roos of 1-2 years old that I'd like to dispatch this year and replace with new blood. So far my butchering skills have been limited to doing 2 old hens myself and watching...
I've had interest too. Talked to one farm about it, but it didn't work out as they were overwhelmed by the paperwork. We didn't even get into costs. I feel your pain. I'd like to find a good source of milk in Ohio near me, but so far no luck.
Well, I had start it in a quart jar and I wanted to keep a good bit to give it a good start when I switched over to a gallon jar. I probably drank 6 oz of it, though.
I put up a couple gallon of blackberries, though I could have gotten lots more if I'd have had time to pick and the temps during those weeks had been cooler.
Much cooler now and the AC is off. Nice except for when the dog barks at night outside my window. :barnie

Praying.
The power of a prayer chain is just amazing. Word traveling around the country and even abroad in such a short time and prayers going up. All for someone none of know. Awesome! :thumbsup
This is hilarious! :lau I'm only doing water kefir and kombucha so far, but my mother calls them my science experiments and is afraid to touch anything in the kitchen these days. ;)
Thanks Miss. The lid or no lid thing confused me. I have used a lid after my first batch as it didn't seem to taste like anything more than sugar water with only a cloth covering.
With my busy schedule the WK is usually sitting with lid for 3 days at a time. Last night I transferred my WK into...
Returning to this aging thread. :D
Last night I received my swing top bottles in the mail. FINALLY. Bigger than I expected them to be. I believe they hold 16 to 18 ounces, but I didn't take time to check. :P
Washed them up and then bottled 9 of them with fresh kombucha. I decided to try...
Rathbone, you could get a bottle of GT's raw kombucha at a health food store and start from that. It is what I did. Made a regular kombucha tea recipe and added the bottle of Kombucha as starter. If raw, there are lots of yeasties to get a scoby started. My first scoby was really thin, and I...
Wait a minute! What is a micro 'scovie?
I have a muscovy that decided to set a nest, so I just let her -- and I'll let her worry about brooding them. They do grow faster when foraging with the mother than in my brooders.
I have no experience with reversing allergies, but I've been reading a lot about things like the GAPS diet helping to restore the gut so that traditional foods like dairy can be reintroduced. Some lactose intolerant folks claim they can tolerate raw and fermented dairy products just not...
This year there wasn't much garden to brag about and really none to preserve:
Tomatoes
Zucchini
Peppers
Basil (best of all the garden)
Eggplant
Broccoli
Green Beans (died)
And plenty of weeds, including lambs quarter, which is edible
Apple trees
I also have:
Chickens (will butcher extra roos...
I here ya, WBF. Many in my family and some friends think I'm nuts to put so much time, money, and energy into my poultry and gardening and traditional cooking. They think because I'm single with a decent job that I should spend the money on travel, convenient food and restaurants, and gadgets. I...
