Justasnak, the straw bale instructions I read said I'd need to water daily, but not so in this weather. I did have one flower sort of on the edge of a bale dry out, but the center of the bales are holding moisture well. In fact the whole thing is growing fungus - unfortunately not the edible...
I'm not sure what's wrong with the link. I tried to fix it.
It is on Backyard Chickens. Thread titled - Bag out of Layena package (updated w tutorial) by oandrea
I use just a regular needle and all-purpose thread on my old sewing machine. The lady on BYC (dmccann) uses a serger. Here is the tutorial page: http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=374147
Most of my purses start as 14 x 14 squares and I use at least a 1/4 inch seam. I also...
Vinegar is an alternative cleaner to bleach, but I'm not sure what too much of it would do to the natural bacteria in a septic either.
Can you just boil some utensils without bleach?
Still it is hard to image you are getting too much bleach built up in the septic considering all the showers...
Multiflora rose is the nuisance that we have. I heard it was brought in to use as fenceline from Asia and then took over. Cattle hate the thorny things that pop up in their grazing areas. My farming neighbor sprays the roses to try to combat their spread, but the hill behind my house is covered...
I also love to find sites online that give the history of the plant/weed. What modern folks looking for a pristine yard fight against were the plants immigrants (our own ancestors) wouldn't leave home without. They brought these to plant in their New World gardens as food and medicine they...
I've got an auto waterer from Wal-mart. Here It is about one quart with a tray that is perfect for them to step into. They do get it dirty with food fast no matter what I do.
Have you noticed when you Google the name of one of these plants (weeds) you get words like "evasive" and the need to "control" or "eradicate" them? :D
I just want to know if I can eat it and how to use it. ;) Makes me feel like a rebel. :lau :plbb
And Google led me to this good site...
And this seems like what Rebecca posted as her first picture in #77.
I don't know what it is. Not a good picture. Actually the left side should be the top, and the plant is tall, but it was leaning out from the building toward me. I see it a lot, and I wonder if the grain-like flower/seed stalk...
Anyone know this one? It bushes and vines out. Looks a bit like the mallow with the rounded leaves, but it has a different growing habit and I don't think it has flowers. This has a fragrance that is fresh and a bit spicy, I guess. The leaves all stand out straight along the vine toward the sun...
Ah yes, with the broadleaf plantain. I wasn't focused on common clover. :) I know you can use the white and red flowers as pretty salad additions. I have heard of clover jelly from the flowers, but I haven't had it.
I've been hatching lots of chicks this year (though my success rate on eggs has been down from last year for some reason). I've had to find creative ways to house chicks. Some older ones are in a collaspable hard sided swimming pool.
I've used broodies in rabbit hutches or cages (no heat lamp...
Finally!
Here are a few pictures of my straw bale garden. I even have about 2 bales of space I can still fill.
Zucchini (down in the middle)and bush beans are up from seed, everything else was plant starts.
I used some plastic I had along the west side to try to avoid drying by the evening sun...
Took some pictures last night around the yard of edibles. Yum!
Lamb's Quarters (use like spinach) Triangle shaped leaves on a tall stalk.
Narrow leafed Plantain (use medicinally or when young as fresh greens)
Wide leafed Plantain (use medicinally or when young as fresh greens)
Oxalis or...
Great thread! :thumbsup
I know I have these in my yard:
purslane
dandelion
Jerusalem artichoke
lamb's quarters
plantain
red clover
mint
echinacea
mallow (my friend makes a traditional dish for her husband who is from Lebanon and was delighted to know she could forage for mallow - a main...
