    Anniversary Today for me!

Oh Farmerchick, sorry your plans didn't work out, but seems that it was a celebration - the two of you were together and sometimes that's enough. I also had to smile reading that with your anniversary so close to Christmas you opted for the light show. Our anniversary is Dec. 1 and there's...

    homemade laundry detergent/shampoo

I don't use the finest grater, just the regular size. What I would use if I were grating cheese. I've never had a problem grating soap. I should have mentioned that I use Ivory bar soap. It doesn't seem as harsh and leaves a very slight fresh scent.

DH got some help clearing the snow

It's great to have helpful neighbors - wish there were more of them. Take care with the ice. We had it a few days ago and are still dealing with it.

    Your Weather

Temps never got out of the negatives yesterday. Windchills at -30. Dear Coolie shivered the entire time I milked her. We probably worry too much about our animals - they seem to take it all in stride. It's about 3 a.m. and the winds have finally subsided. Monday is suppose to be in the...

I DID IT! Picture on new camera!

Nothing more peaceful than a sleeping babe. She sure is cute! Great pics - the sausage looks good, can almost smell it cooking. What time is breakfast?

    What Ya'll Baking for Holidays?

The baking blitz has begun! Our kitchen has been warm and toasty and smells like Christmas. I was beginning to wonder, but it looks like we'll have Christmas cookie trays to share afterall. I've made Chocolate Crinkles, Almond Sugar cookies, Cinnamon Crackles (a new recipe that's a keeper)...

    homemade laundry detergent/shampoo

I've been using homemade laundry soap on and off for the last 5-6 years. Faithfully, for the last 8 months. I'm happy with the results. I do use Spray and Wash to treat sometimes, especially my DH work clothes. But, I had to use that with store bought, too. I use the liquid recipe.

    Whats for Dinner?

An arctic freeze is upon us in N. IN. It never got above 0 yesterday with wind chills -25. Saturday I used a ham bone from the freezer for Bean Soup. Of course we had to have cornbread, too. Sunday, we had Barbequed ham sandwiches, on homemade Kaiser rolls and fried potatoes. (We had this...

    sweetened condensed milk

Thanks for the recipe, but especially the review. I've seen recipes for making this, but never knew if it would work good. Seven layer bars are always a favorite here and would be a good "test" for this new recipe.

    Just a little Hog Info

Freezers we have...........3 chests. But, we do store some for my DD and SIL and my parents. I've been frantically trying to use up some meats. One is almost completely empty. It helped that we fixed a 24+ pound turkey at Thanksgiving, 3 hams for our Christmas party and a very large cured...

    Cooking Oils

We really don't use much oil, at least not on a daily basis. Like Homesteadmom, I use lard for pie crusts, biscuits and sugar cookies. It makes these so flaky. YUM We have the extra virgin olive oil and canola oil for other uses. And, sometimes bacon grease for those times we splurge and...

    Just a little Hog Info

FarmerChick, thanks for sharing your experience with us. Some great information. We are just finishing our first adventure in pigs. They go to the butcher next week.

    Your Weather

Friday's storm wasn't as fierce as predicted. We got plenty of ice with many closings, but we didn't lose electric power as uaual here. We were prepared for the worse just the same. We have a few branches to clear once the ice melts some. Thankfully, that's the extent of the damage. The...

    Your Weather

We woke to another day in the teens, but as the day passed, it warmed to the 20s and is climbing. Then the storm hits (midnight)-snow, rain, ice, sleet, snow. Just another day of cold crazy weather - that's living in Indiana. Hope all is well with everyone with this storm system. It's...

    Menus?

I have used menus in the past. It does help in so many ways. I've gotten away from it, but always have the intention of getting back to it in the back of my mind. It's really helpful to save the menus to go back to for inspiration.

    Whats for Dinner?

Poppycat, can you save the pot roast by maybe simmering in some salsa for tacos? The salsa should help tenderize the meat. Sorry, it's just the frugal in me. I baked all morning at my parent's house. When I finally got home it was almost time to milk and do evening chores. All I had was one...

    What Ya'll Baking for Holidays?

Pierogi, so good, but so much work. I'm the only one in this large family that makes them from start to finish. My sister will help roll the dough and my Mom will cook them up as we go. And, they all eat them, and eat and eat until there gone. But, no one will help carry on this family...

Time management and living self sufficient.......

.........is there a way to do this and still have time to cherish the little things? I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the appropriate place, hope so. We have always lived simple by most people definition. But, in the last 5 years and since moving to this old farm, we have really moved...
