Wow so many great ideas and tips. I've think I narrowed down the next steps to be Dehydrating, Bee Keeping and Cheese Making. I'm going to study up this winter and hopefully make the next steps Bee purchase, and cow/goat investment in the spring. Of course there is also canning more...LOTS...

I'm slowly becoming more self suffient. I have a big garden that needs to be bigger, a flock of chickens, I can, but not nearly as much as most of you (doesn't last past xmas). So what would be another step in the right direction?
I would like to plant a winter garden but I have no clue what I could plant. I live in Zone 4 in New York State...am I to late to get started. Any advise? Thanks
