    Alternative Ideas # 2

private well with dual power (electric/solar) and we live in an area that gets sun something like 350 days a year. Also fairly close to a river, although that water is chancy in the summer due to algae bloom

    Alternative Ideas

We have our wood stove, followed by campstove (as long as we have some propane) followed by the grill which can use either charcoal or wood. To start fires we have lighters, matches, and steels. A fire piston is on my list since it's one of the easier "primitive" ways to start a fire.

    Memes That Make You Giggle

(taken from Wikipedia) The first known bicycle was shown by the Comte de Sivrac, who in 1791 was seen riding a two-wheel "wooden horse" in the gardens of the Palais Royal in Paris. Called a celerifere, the machine had two rigidly mounted wheels, so that it was incapable of being steered. To...

    composting

I'm lazy. I made several bins using concrete blocks with gaps for air. Fill one up and let it sit. Occasionally I throw some water on it if it seems dry beyond the top (no turning). When one is full, I start the next. It generally takes about a year for them to finish this way, but it works...

    Favorite Homemade Cookies

I used to make something we called Stained Glass cookies: A refrigerator dough filled with candied fruit. Chilled, then sliced thinly enough so the pieces of fruit looked like stained glass pieces framed by the dough. Very pretty, and tasty. Don't make them these days as the candied fruit is...

    Favorite Homemade Cookies

sigh... my family didn't do much. We put up a tree when I was small. I remember when I was 14, I found out my parents weren't going to get a tree anymore. I saved up my allowance and got a friend's mom to take me downtown and I bought a small tree. Took it home and decorated it while the...

    Bug Out Bag/Emergency Camping

Our two biggest disasters would be wildfire, which is pretty much an annual thing, and volcanic eruption- lots more damage very quickly, but not a common occurrence. We have a small travel trailer that we can evacuate with if necessary (if we have time to evacuate). We've done what we can to...

    Porridge

I remember a line in a story I read, when the hero was offered some porridge, and told to "Eat it quick, before it sets up!" Seriously though, I've always liked porridge, although, as I've said elsewhere, my favorite breakfast was wheat berries with butter and salt. The crunchiness was so...

    rodeogirl's journey to being self-sufficient

we have a herd that hangs out in our area, even had them birth in the empty lot next to us before. Millie (LGD) doesn't like them because they stand just outside the fence and make jeering faces at her, lol
