Which wheat? Red? White? Hard? Soft?

We grow white winter wheat and I use the pastry flour for anything "wet" like pancakes, muffins, zucchini bread, pie crusts, Irish soda bread, etc. DH's cousin grows hard white wheat that we grind for any kind of yeast bread.

    Black plastic mulch

I get mine from a place called Glacier Valley. It's a mile or 2 long, but I just get a roll to last for years.

    Water Bath Canning Tomatoes Question

I've read that newer tomato hybrids have been bred to have lower acidity. I add 1 T of lemon juice to every quart, 1/2 that to every pint just to be safe.

    Question for garlic growers

Pull it, buy big bulbs from someone else and replant the largest sections next fall. Good luck! Drought hasn't helped garlic, either.

    Water Bath Canning Tomatoes Question

It depends on whether you're doing pints or quarts also. I can't remember off hand, but a good canning book would tell you.

How Much Does "Free" Food Really Cost You?

We're given windfall apples from a cousin. We don't use sugar in our applesauce, so it's just time and electricity. Wild asparagus is free. Wild morels are free, as are the blackberries and black raspberries we pick and freeze whole. I pick elderberries, turn that into juice, and some is used...

What to do with Frozen Tomatoes

I freeze mine since summer gets extremely hectic and I run out of time for canning. I use them in soup and chili all winter.

Stress...how do you deal with it?

Absolutely! I'm glad you were the first to say it :)

Bugs eating my Cucs & Squash

Those are probably cucumber beetles, which can have polka dots or stripes. They're nasty little buggers, eating the flowers and causing disfiguration of the fruit.

Those with children? Having some major issues!!!

Me, too. I think this sounds seriously disturbing. I'm not trying to be upsetting, but I think it deserves some worry. At that age (or pretty much any, except for hunting) my kids have been fascinated and nurturing of animals. I really would have strict supervision and try to figure out what is...

To stay home or not to stay home***I DID IT**

I do vegetables, but the first week I bought in mushrooms to add to the share. Last week I put in kale, Swiss chard, spinach, head lettuce, leaf lettuce mix, sunflower sprouts, pea pods, strawberries, chocolate mint, pea shoots, radish pods, garlic scapes and a 6-pack of herb plants.

To stay home or not to stay home***I DID IT**

I do both. The CSA is guaranteed pre-paid money, but the markets have been really great for me this year also. I also do a small amount of wholesale veggies to a local hospital.

To stay home or not to stay home***I DID IT**

Good luck to you!! I've been able to grow this business from $4000 the first year (working 24 hours at another job at home, a 4-yo and 6-yo) to much, much more than that 6 years later. Enough to buy a tractor, shed, build a walk-in cooler and lean-to greenhouse all last year with no loans. Once...

    Quitting Commercial Pectin

Do you know how much 1/3 cup of this weighs? I just wonder how many batches I could get from 1 lb, as having it shipped to me will be pretty expensive. Thanks!

Help- Family is sick of the same 10 things for supper

Oh yeah, I forgot...sandwiches :D Nothing wrong with a whole-wheat PB&J! We have nearly 1.5 acres of gorgeous organic fruits and vegetables, and it kills me that I have so little time to use them in exotic dishes. It comes down to super fast and super easy for us all summer long. But we have 3...

Our new veg plot in Japan

It looks beautiful! I grow organically here, and weeds are such a big issue, aren't they? Really, as common sense as it is, I remind myself every year that the most important thing is to not let a weed go to seed. A garden doesn't have to be completely stripped of weeds, but they must not go to...

Squash bugs have killed my squash and zucc's....

I finally broke down and got Pyganic, based on pyrethrin, derived from Chrysanthemums. It seems to be working on our potato beetles, squash bugs and cucumber beetles. They were do bad that we had 2 dozen squash bugs per cucumber plant, and even more than that on the potato beetles. With 1200...
