For Those Unprepared, Will It Be Like This..??

We're in hurricane alley here on the SC coast. Seems like every time there's a hurricane in the Caribbean there's a run on beer and water. Note the order there...... We have water and gas stored, all rotated regularly. Plenty of canned and frozen food. I stock the freezer during the fall and...

    TP Scam!

Yep. Anyone looked at a can of chunk light tuna lately? It's gone from 6.5 oz. in the past to 5 oz. And the meat isn't as light as it used to be, there's more of the very strong tasting dark mixed in. I called Star-Kist about both issues. They apologized (not explained) and sent me 2 free...

Turns out I DON'T hate pea soup....

Thank you! Hmmmm.... I have a ham for today, so I could make split pea soup later and freeze the bone for when I want lentils. Yum!

Turns out I DON'T hate pea soup....

Good grief, this was not the night to google phytic acids, lol! Would I be anywhere in the ballpark to say it binds with essential minerals and prevents absorption? And that perhaps adding some acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar to the short soak will help alleviate that effect? Bit off...

Turns out I DON'T hate pea soup....

Works great with lentils, too. The brown lentils are the firmest and the good news is that lentils don't need pre-soaking!

    Too Hot??

Go for it! We are constantly replanting here in coastal SC, with the alternating hot and muggy to pouring buckets of rain. It's a challenge. And the bugs... Yellow squash does well, tomatoes, hot peppers, cucumbers, potatoes- all of are coming in well right now. Southern peas will...

    South Carolina?

Compost and manure will help immensely. Have you thought of maybe "terracing" the hill? A series of raised beds, stairstepping down the hill? It would level each bed out and look very cool! Silver Poni, :welcome

    beef broth

I'm not sure, but I'd bet they do add a colorant. I made my first beef broth a couple of weeks ago, it turned out okay but not stellar flavorwise. The color was pretty good though, probably because I cooked it not only with onion but with the onion skins. Onion skins are widely used as natural...

    thrift, or quality?

I try to be careful with every penny, especially now. But I do shoot for the on sale happy medium! Sometimes I have tried the cheapest house brand, and it has quite good. Sometimes I am disappointed, so I stock up when the brand I want is on sale. I do draw the line at obviously inferior food...

    Organic Chicken Raising! Discussions here!

Howdy all, I made it from the BYC side. I would like to feed organically, but there is no feed available here that is certified organic. I could travel a long way, but the cost is too high anyway. So I still feed commercial lay pellets, but supplement with free ranging and kitchen scraps as...

Homemade Tick Repellent?????What about other bugs! not just ticks

I mixed vanilla extract in a bottle of lotion I had, and it worked short term, against mosquitos. I had to reapply every 2 hours or so, but now I have lovely soft skin and smell like baking! :P

    South Carolina?

:lau , that's ok, I meant to say 1.64, not 1.46! :lau On the serious side, if you are friendly, it can't hurt to ask. Just give her lots of corn, and be very respectful of her land. Good luck!

Signs of spring in your area?

I know spring is here- the eggs are disappearing from the nest boxes. It means the 2 yellow rat snakes, who wintered under the house, are awake and hungry. They're getting about 5 a day. :barnie

Signs of Spring? The cloud of pollen enveloping us. :/ DH and I can barely breathe for the allergies. But then there's the pink lining in the cloud- from the porch:

    Bee~ Journal of then...

Now THAT is a neat idea! "Honey, take some eggs out to thaw for breakfast, please." I can see his face now.... :lau I have got to try that! I give all the shells back to the chickens currently, but I am going to try them with the tomatoes.
