    ScottyG and some random thoughts

I'm married to a dark-haired, artistic, Bjork-loving, shorty, who dreams of being an at-home dad someday! You two sound so alike! Some of Bjork's music perplexes me, but I think she's awesome and love a lot of her stuff. My favorite is "It's Oh So Quiet". Especially when my husband...

    Goats - Horns

Also, I don't know your situation but if you have small kids around, and want them to be able to be around the goats you'll feel much better/safer if the goats have been disbudded. (Assuming you have full sized goats, not the mini's. I don't know if this applies to the mini breeds or not.)

    Goats - Horns

Believe me, I know exactly where youre coming from, Im a vegetarian too, have been since I was 12! It certainly isnt necessary to disbud, and if you only keep 2 goats, it probably wont be a big problem, just expect to be saying ouch a lot more when youre working around them! I had a friend...

    Goats - Horns

I raised goats when I was younger (much younger!) and all of them were disbudded as kids. I was lucky because I grew up on a dairy farm (cows) and it was a regular duty of my father to disbud the calves, so he didnt think twice about taking care of disbudding my kids, and I didnt have to think...

My Cross Stitch in the works

That's adorable! You've reminded me that I have a cross stitch project tucked away that I started years ago and then got to the complicated part and hid it away! (it involved ribbon embroidery, I always pick the complicated stuff!) Maybe I should consider finishing it up this winter. Perhaps...

    Internet without Satalite tv.........?!

We get DSL through our phone line, and we don't do television at all. We do have a Netflix subscription, which allows us to watch movies online whenever we'd like, and they also send us DVD's. Our monthly Netflix subscription is about $8-9 dollars a month, but we usually ask our parents for a...

    Bad News...

Try to get your hands on a pair of snowshoes and some poles. My husband and I started snowshoeing last winter and it's great! We've always cross-country skied which is nice, but I like the snowshoeing better because you're less limited in the types of terrain you can go on, and you're much...

    We got bad news today.....

I cant tell you how sorry I am to hear this heartbreaking news. My thoughts are with you and your husband. Ive noticed in the past few years that even people who have not had nearly as good a prognosis as your husband come out of this just fine so you have every reason to be fully optimistic...

Do you put sugar in your spaghetti sauce?

I usually put a shredded carrot in my tomato sauce instead of sugar.

    Request for Hunting Section

True, but I usually click into the newest threads at the bottom of the page, which don't say what category they belong to. So it's easy to see a title like "Look what I got today" and I'd click into it thinking I'd see a picture of someone's new goat or chicken or wheelbarrow or butter churn...

    Request for Hunting Section

I vote for "Hunting and Fishing." I don't do either but it seems silly to have a self sufficiency site without including those 2 topics! But could we please emphasize with those that post under that topic to please warn people in the title when something is graphic. I often read these posts on...

your experiences with "pings" or "pops"

Thank you all for your helpful responses. I'll be patient and if tomorrow morning the 2 jars are still not sealed I'll put them in the fridge. Patandchickens, I'm glad you mentioned picking the jars up by the lid when the bands are removed as a test. I hadn't heard of that. I had read that...

your experiences with "pings" or "pops"

This was my first year canning, and I was wondering about jars sealing and the whole pinging or popping thing. Here's my 2 questions: 1) I canned a few jars of peaches earlier this season, and not a single one pinged, but all the jars appear to be well sealed (no flexing lids, tryed pulling...

Holiday gifts from the kitchen ~ share your ideas!

What kind of wax did you use? Where did you get it from? I've been thinking about making candles and that sounds like a nice way to make them. I'd like to use beeswax but I don' t think I've ever seen a beewax jar candle. Any bee people know why that is? Does beeswax not melt the right way...

    Need some quick canning/substitution help!

Here's the recipe I used. This is the first time I've made it so I can't make any claims about it making a great pie, but it certainly looks beautiful, and I tasted the syrup and it was delicious (even with a bit of lime juice instead of lemon juice! ;)) Oh, and I recommend you prepare 7...

    Need some quick canning/substitution help!

Oh I hope so, because I'm just about to add it. I guess I could always call it Key Lime Apple Pie if it tastes really strange! :D

    Need some quick canning/substitution help!

Thank you me&thegals! That's what I was leaning towards since it seems more similar to lemon juice. This could be an interesting winter of apple pies in this house! It'll either be the brilliant "secret ingredient" or "what's that off-flavor in the pie?" :P

    Need some quick canning/substitution help!

I'm in the middle of making apple pie filling for canning and I just discovered that I don't have enough lemon juice. I need 3 TBS, and I probably have about 1 1/2. I'm guessing I need this for the acidity. The only substitutions I can think of is lime juice, or apple cider vinegar. What do...

Is it just us or is there alot of contamination and recals on food?

I don't know if everyone is aware of this but a country-of-origin law was recently passed, and when I went shopping Friday I was already noticing a huge improvement in labeling on fresh and frozen produce.
