My husband and I watched last night, and we both thought that Obama seems very much ready to lead. We realize hes not perfect, but he has ideas, which is something this country desperately needs, and is something McCain seems to lack. All we hear from McCain is that he doesnt like Obama and he...
The "reach and stop"! I've become very familiar with that move as well lately. My latest reach and stop was for a bag of flour, it was over $5! I looked at my husband and said "I don't think I've ever paid more than $5 for a bag of flour." Then I decided that I didn't need to buy any...
You sound like a tough case Attack-cat! I made my first (bread machine-less) homeade bread this past weekend and it came out pretty darn well! I made the "Beginner bread" recipe from hillbillyhousewife.com. This weekend I'm going to try the recipe below, from an earlier post. It sounds even...
I can totally relate! This past summer, ever since I've tried to really focus on self-sufficiency, I've had to buy all my canning equipment, then of course I needed a blender/food processor to make tomato sauce, apple sauce, pesto, soups, etc., then of course I needed to buy a crock pot so I...
Congratulations on making the decision to quit Roosmom. And congrats on making it though your first week+! :bouquet This is one of those moves in life that will lead you to say "I'm so glad I quit, it was one of the smartest things I've ever done." My husband and I both smoked and quit many...
I just wanted to mention that I bought a crock-pot 2 weeks ago, after someone (patandchickens I think?) suggested it in one of my postings. What a great suggestion that was! I've only made 2 recipes with it so far, vegetarian chili and vegetarian Irish stew and wow! Both came out so good, and...
Thanks for all your responses. I agree FarmerChick, 70% doesn't sound like the greatest efficiency. Perhaps I'm just beind seduced by that loaf of bread baking in the oven in the advertisement! I believe some of the regular woodstoves (not cook stoves) were around 80 and 90%. I've only begun...
FICTION- I just finished a book called Water Witches by Chris Bohjalian and loved it! I'm never good at keeping favorites, they change with the tides, but I highly recommend this one.
DH and I are planning on purchasing a woodstove hopefully within the next year. I recently saw some advertisements for wood cook stoves and it got me wondering if that wouldn't be a good idea. Do any of you use a wood cook stove? Of course we'd keep our electric stove for the warm months, but...
I'm on my last ziplock from a 12 pack I bought about 4 years ago. I wash and reuse the heck out of them! Also, I have a good assortment of small tupperware type containers that my husband and I use for most of our daily lunch needs.
-Work
-take care of the critters, make dinner, and somehow squeeze in baking a carrot cake for DH's birthday tomorrow, and then the exciting part...
-going to see the VT Symphony Orchestra tonight! I've been wanting to do that for so long, and they're finally playing really close by so we...
Here's our Rudy hard at work, on patrol.
He's an expert at keeping birds from landing on the lawn, warning any birds flying overhead, entertaining the chickens, and keeping me warm when I sit on the couch at night.
Here he is guarding a blanket.
You don't want to mess with this guy. ;)
I just subscribed to Countryside Magazine, so I plan on studying them cover to cover as they arrive. I'm planning my list to Santa based on some of the suggestions I received on an earlier positing about good SS books. If anyone reads something they're particularly impressed with this winter...
Soon I will see orchestra.
(Some of you need to go back to the first page and read the directions carefully. You're making us people who are playing by the rules look foolish! And by the way, good luck starting the next sentence with "orchestra";))
I would add a really tight cap on CEO salaries, until that particular company has paid back every cent plus interest, and personally, I don't see why this shouldn't be funded most heavily by the wealthy. I think it's ridiculous to expect the middle and low income to shell out just as much money...
Also, realize that there's a good chance your husband has a funny image in his head of hillbillys living in a rusted out school bus when you talk about "self-sufficiency". It doesn't have to be that way. I think only about 1/2 of us live in rusted out school buses here, right? :P
