Thanks for the info Niele! I forget what island he's on but he knows my birds and likes my stock.
I've been wanting to get certified anyway, I have a friend that will do it for cost.
What a great idea pressure cooking beans! Pressure cooking is a great way of cooking allot of things, especially things you want to infuse flavor into!
I was going o look into that too... but I know he has no incubator...would have to time it with a broody hen. :idunno I hear so much about people who bought shipped eggs winding up with "scrambled" eggs (in the shell) too :/
Thanks! I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I know it's been done. Guess the first step would be USDA. My friend says from what he's seen most of the chickens are from Asian decent or mixed with Asian stock, kinda on the thin side and not that great of producers. There's lots of them running wild...
I have a friend in Hawaii who has chickens however he's a bit disappointed in the quality. He would love to get some chicks from my stock here in Wisconsin. Anyone know how feasible it is to ship him some chicks?
I have not actually seen it, but I was told by an "old pro" that sometimes a hen will help a chick by pecking at the shell a bit. So if you incubate... your the helpful hen.
A few ways you can go about it... the hardest is to save a bit (like $10 a week) to buy a larger item. This means really cutting back and living rather poorly until you can build your stocks. You can "barrow" from yourself or someone to build you stocks then live off them while paying back. You...
One of my broody hens hatched 14 chicks (out of 15 eggs) 15 days ago...as of last night she still has 14! :clap Last year a broody hatched 7 in May, one had an accident at the end of the month, still not bad. Maybe it is a "southern" thing. :hu
OK, I didn't read all the posts but.... I think that the type of woman that would take on so much work to be self sufficient, would not NEED a man as much as many women would. I see it as a partnership. I am not physically able to do allot of work, however my DH couldn't do it without my help...
I have never done it, but it dose sound feasible. If you choose to "free range" I would agree about the guineas. 4 to 6 should do, and raise them with the chickens. 1 rooster per 10 hens would also be good. They would alert and protect the flock. I read a story about some guineas taking on an...
I don't know, I realize every area is different but I've been feeding my family, buying pet food, getting toiletries and cleaning supplies on $35 per person per week (or less) for years. There was a time when we had to get food stamps and we never ate better! I even stocked up on what I could...
Don't know where you live but, yea, I would check out laws in your area. You may get around it by offering to "help out" on their property or yours for a donation. However some areas don't allow butchering at all.
We wanted to just rent a chicken plucker but no one around here rents them. My...
I have no idea what happen! Hubby made the deal. At least we hadn't paid for them. It's OK, I found a local guy (a 4H leader) that will sell the same type of turkey for $3 ! No shipping needed! But I have to wait 'till June. Don't think you can beat that unless you get them free!
