I'm trying my first-ever batch of tomato soup. Went to the local market fruit on Thursday and picked up a 1/2 bushel of "blemished" tomatoes for $10. It really stinks having to buy tomatoes, but the garden only gave me enough to eat fresh and make 6 qts of sauce. :somad
I got tired of the rat-race a few years ago. All this "keep up with the Jones'" mentality.
I decided that I didn't care anymore what people thought of the 15 year old car I drive, or that I don't have the latest electronic gadget, or that my lawn had dandelions, I LIKE THAT SEA OF YELLOW! If...
Not on my account :) It might be a week till I would even see it.
Justasnak, I just looked at my messages and found that the only PM's I've received are in response to ones I sent out so you're ahead of me. :)
Don't feel bad. I've been here almost as long as you and I only had 2-3.
Was more pic storage space added? I'm at 101% so I need to delete some if I have new ones to post. It took a while but I figured out that when you delete from your album you also lose them in the post where they are located.
Thanks all. I did a much more extensive survey today. Looks like most of the cherry tomatoes are finished. I trimmed a lot of the foliage off them to stress them out and hasten the ripening process. Guess that was a mistake this year. The roma appear to be a little more tolerant of cold...
We had our first frost on Thursday night :th 6 weeks before we normally should. It appears to have been very localized and we were among the lucky few that got hit. Cukes, beans, and cantaloupe are done. Tomatoes took a pretty good hit but the plants had a lot of foliage and only the outer...
You bet. I dried a lot of pears last year. We ate them all winter. I also made mountains of pear leather. It's so easy to drop a bunch of peeled pears into the blender, hit the puree button for a minute or two and pour it onto the tray's. 8 hour's later you have a snack the kids can't keep their...
Chickens work well too. This year we are keeping our banty's in the fenced yard with the dogs. We haven't found one tick on any of the 7 dogs where last year we would need to pick them off every day.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!! Don't just through it all away. :(
11 years ago my grandmother died and had MOUNTAINS of canning stuff that her children, in their infinite wisdom, trashed because they didn't want to deal with it all. I look back on that now that I am canning and cringe at the waste...
During the spring, summer, and fall, we're outside until dark every night. There is always something to do here. Both kids have pretty much moved out although this is still their address, so it's just Becky & me to keep this place looking like someone lives here, take care of the garden, the...
I do it the same way as FD. I have a lot of my own herbs so I just put in a sprig or two of oregano, basil, and parsley. A few shakes of dried onion and garlic, and some dried green pepper. Oh and some salt too. I taste it and add things till I like the flavor.
We fenced in about 7 acres with T posts (except at the corners and gates where you need good heavy wooden posts sunk 2-1/2 to 3' in the ground) and braided wire. It's 4 strands and about 5' high. We did all the post pounding and wire stringing ourselves. The material ( posts, wire, solar...
I was doing a job for an 88yo lady and when I finished, we got talking about gardens. I asked her if she canned  as if I didn't know. She said she did a lot in her younger days but hadn't done any for 15-20 years. Of course I had to ask, " Do you still have your equipment?" She did...
Well, I started the cool weather stuff again a couple weeks ago; Taters, beets peas, lettuce, carrots and broccoli. It's all up so lets hope for an actual harvest in Oct. :fl
