    Heirloom seeds exchange thread

I'm interested especially in barter/trade. Will have to get my list together after the holiday rush. I do think it would be good to make sure you list the gardening zone you live in so we don't request seed that won't do well in our zone. ;)

    Prescription bottles

We take ours to our doctor's office and one of the nurses recycles them to mission clinics. Check with local churches to see if they have such a program. We just make sure we remove the labels before we turn them in.

best place to get your seeds?

I have gotten great heritage seeds from Sandhill Preservation in Iowa. Glen and Linda raise heriloom plants, seeds and poultry. Great people to deal with and the catalog is very informative. I have purchased seeds and poultry from them for years. www.sandhillpreservation.com

What did they do before ... ?

This method is still uses (minus the sacking) in some Amish communities here in Ohio. I have seen single, double and triple reels hooked together and pulled by a single pony or horse. Push reel mowers are also in use. Other communities use power mowers.

    Bubblingbrooks Journey - Salut!

Cool pics. My brother lives near Nikishki on the Kenai penn. He has sent us lots of pictures of moose, bear and caribo hunts. He used to fly in across the Cook inlet to hunt but fell off his deck last year and broke his shoulder so can't pilot the plane right now. I got to visit once and I got...

What can you tell me about these chicken breeds?

We have had Buckeyes for several years. They are slower growing than lighter breeds but make great dual purpose birds. We butcher spring chicks (roosters) in the fall ( so we don't feed extra birds all winter) and they make great meat birds. Hens lay a large brown egg. They are not...

    a rare Austrian Mangalitza Gilt

This is a very old breed that has gone out of favor in our "modern" agriculture scene. They have been reported to be extinct so I'm glad to see that they are still around.:ya

    BarredBuff's Homesteading Shenanigans

Rabbit is a denser meat than chicken. It works best if you cook it more like you would cook pork although the taste is not the same. Rabbits are easy to butcher and because you skin them not as much hassle as plucking chickens. Make sure you bleed them very well or you may get an off taste. Cut...

    Need some ideas....

Grocery shop early in the day. That way you get first pick at the reduced items. Today I picked up a "family" pack of boneless pork chops (9), mushrooms and doughnuts at greatly reduced prices. Meat and mushrooms were "use today or freeze" and doughnuts (for DH) were on the day old shelf. I...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

For jams and jellies I wash the jars and put them on cookie sheets in a warm oven. I put the lids and rings in a saucepan and keep them hot (simmer). I put two or three jars at a time on a towel on the counter. I put the boiling hot jam/jelly in the jar.I pick up the lids and rings with a...

Colowyo - grudgingly settling in :P

If you have access to leaves in the fall bag them (dry) and save for litter in the chicken house. The birds love to dig through them and they break down very well to make great compost material when you clean the house out. Here in Ohio we get lots of leaves in the fall. We use them right...

Help me choose my next chickens

Go to www.albc-usa.org and check out the breed on the poultry conservation list. There are good descriptions there. Heritage breeds are cool and don't cost any more to feed than commercial breeds. I have Buckeyes and Welsummers and am pleased with both.:D

    recycled wool sweaters

Look for wool suit jackets too...they felt very nicely IF they don't have the iron on stabalizer that won't peel off. I have felted jackets that had stabalizer lining that you could peel off but the other stuff is almost impossible. Of course with suit jackets, etc. you have to deconstruct the...

Urban's Journal- It is no more.

What kind of wool do you want? Some wool is easier to spin, some is softer to wear, some is better for outer wear, etc. I am a spinner and a weaver and have raised sheep (Shetlands) and dairy goats (Alpines). If you can afford to have both get 1 or 2 ewes with the type of wool you want and 1...

    farm to table survey

Interesting survey. I'm a mix...Buy some groceries at the store, buy from Farmer's Market at least once a month during season, buy some fruits and veggies for canning and freezing from local truck farmer and fruit farms, have a few raised beds for trying heirloom veggies, and I participate in a...
