Random and intentional acts of kindness

We aren't well off... by a long shot and we generally just scrape by, but I like to do nice things once in a while for others, and people have been generally nice to me as well :) I was working in a chinese restaurant and we had a regular customer, an elderly gentleman who came in alone about...

    $80 organic turkey....and

A normal grocery store turkey that's 14 pounds would be $56 here, so that doesn't seem that unreasonable to me... but I know you guys get crazy good deals on turkey around this time of year... ours goes on sale for about $2.49/pound at our thanksgiving. There is NO WAY I would pay $178 for a...

Can Someone Please Cheer Me Up?

if you come out east things are a lot cheaper... course there's also few good jobs :) We paid $25,000 for our 3 bed, 1 bath home and 6 acres of land, but it needed TONS of work. Don't worry Leta, things always happen for a reason... we offered on a farm last year and our offer for $80,000...

DianeS - Listeria spreading, culling the rabbits

I would love to try something similar... I followed the red paperclip guy and thought that was amazing... Our dream house is for sale just down the road from us... I don't think it will sell fast, it's a HUGE, very OLD house with 2 large barns and 48 acres of land... we need $150,000 to buy...

Schooling your child to void his bowels outside on the leash!

Yep... mine too... if he can back right into a tree and poop ON the tree he's really happy... and he prefers if no one looks at him while he's doing it :)

    Do other people's bills.......

My goal is to live pretty well on about $2000 a month... without being off grid, but being as self sufficient as possible on our little plot and having as little debt as possible (hopefully none). In april we make our last debt payments, then we will own both our vehicles and our house and I...

Me Three! I probably have 400 sewing patterns (most are gorgeous vintage patterns from the 40's-60's) and have yet to sew any of those... sigh... someday....

    I can't get peanut butter

We pay $6.49 for PB here (store brand)... but it's a HUGE jar... 2kgs, so I think that's 4.4 pounds. Hubby eats one of those jars every two weeks, it makes me ill. I'm growing peanuts next year and he'll have to eat my natural peanut butter next year. :)

Overpopulation...how does this set with you?

There was a guy who did this in the 1960's? with mice, John Calhoun was his name I think... except that he gave them unlimited resources (food, water, bedding, etc.)... the only limit on their population was space. The population exploded for the first year, social structure began to break...

    The Separate Property Tax Thread

Wow... we went house shopping and looked at a farm with 48 acres, 2300 sq foot house, two large barns (one dairy) and the property taxes were 1200/year. It's based on the value of the house... since that house is valued at $100,000, it's 1.2% yearly for rural taxes here... more in the cities...

    ...

Here's a recipe if you want to cook 'Breakfast for dinner' over the open fire... we usually eat this for breakfast when we're camping because we exclusively cook over a campfire :) The bacon fat keeps the bag from actually igniting. Breakfast in a paper bag Required: Paper lunch bag...

This year was not a good one. Tips for next year?

Is the house already in foreclosure? Are there things you could do to prevent that? Maybe subdivide a few 1 acre building lots? (Building lots sell for $15,000-$90,000 depending on location, you'd have a smaller place that could maybe be paid for) Take in renters if you are close to a city...

    Discovery of the Habitat ReStore

Ours has the same sign on the door 'No bargains, all prices are firm and clearly marked. Items without price tags will not be sold' I'm guessing they had issues with people taking the price tags off stuff and then asking how much something was.

WHoooHooo!! I WIN!! First Fire of the season!!

WOOHOO! I LOVE fires in the woodstove... it makes the house feel so cozy. We haven't lit ours yet, wood isn't coming until October 6th, but it's been below freezing for the past several nights so I can't wait to light a morning fire to get the chill out of this house :)

Buying/Selling for PT Income -Ending early

For Ebay I check for things I would normally watch prices on... clothes, textile type categories... because those are what I love browsing at the thrift stores. So I look at teen brand names of clothing, maternity clothing, sheets... stuff like that. And toys/character textiles from my...

Buying/Selling for PT Income -Ending early

I knew that original Fraggles stuff can be collectible so I just bought them on a whim because they were all 80's cartoon stuff... the starting prices of my auctions were only a dollar since I figured I would triple my money that way... instead I made almost $100 off the three sheets. They were...

Buying/Selling for PT Income -Ending early

I bought some bedsheets at the local Salvation Army store for 25 cents a piece... one was Rainbow Brite, one Popples, and one Fraggles... I sold them individually on Ebay. The popples one sold for the most to someone in Japan for $47US! I was SO excited! I'd love to be able to do stuff like...
