We are waiting for the one at 18 to be about a month along so that the embryo settles on the uterus wall...

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

Short update here again. Breeding season is dragging on. Quite frustrating to see everybody talk about confirmed pregnancies and here we are with 4 mares, and still no luck. We did all our homework, got everybody cultured, some even had fertility tests done to make sure everything was good and...

Stress...how do you deal with it?

Find a good husband and remember that on your worst, most stressed out day, somebody out there has it worse. Always. And I am in the same boat as you are, except for the kids. 6 horses, husband gone during the week, full time work, a farm...it gets overwhelming. I like listening to Jason Aldeans...

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

Ahhhfirst day on the new job is over. Quite overwhelming as expected. It will have to take some getting used to getting back into the 12-14hr days, but it is, what it is. The barn wont pay for itself so it is back to the grindstone for me. The new paycheck wont be as good as what I used to make...

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

No need to be angry at yourself Trim, like you said, it is part of learning. Especially with bees, there is no 100% right way to do it. They are complicated beings, just like chickens and horses. The two methods of disinfecting I heard about involved either a power washer, a hot bath in...

    Cheap and easy drop pan?

Hey Trim, nothing to forgive there. My other chicken house has a concrete floor actually which tends to sweat, so that may be why I am not having too many dust issues with the chickens. OP, please disregard my previous post on using sawdust.

livin' on the funny farm- SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:weee Congratulations!!!! We did the same thing last year and it wasn't as bad as we thought. Keep up the good work!

    Cheap and easy drop pan?

How about just using plain old sawdust? I hate shavings too and they don't compost worth a darn, plus they are expensive. I put a layer of sawdust into my chicken houses (that don't have the wire) and it works well. As far as composting goes, yes, their poop stinks bad. If you have other...

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

Hey Trim, Whoa, yeah hold it right there. You may have some disease that travelled with the frames/hives you aquired. On another note, the mold may have developed due to condensation. Either way, before trying to attract anything, go ahead and disinfect all of the empty hives. Clean out the wax...

Sunsaver, Livining Off-Grid In Suburbia- Happy Taconight America!

Hey Sunsaver, I just wanted to say that I saw your comment on hiccups. I will try your method, I get them all the time and they usually last forever. The only thing that has helped me in the past is a schluck of Jaegermeister.

    Cheap and easy drop pan?

I have a chicken house that I bought with a wire floor for the droppings to fall through. Not worth it, it makes a huge mess and we are in our 3rd year now and need to replace the wire because it broke from us trying to scrape the poop off it that didn't fall through. Very messy and not very...

    Hatching in May

Funny you should say that! I haven't lost any birds int he last few months except for May, I lost 3 to various causes. I don't know when they were hatched though. Very interesting!

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

Whew, Almost done with this week. I did so much, but it doesnt feel like much has gotten accomplished. I am helping breed the last mare, then it is a waiting game again. The first mares can be foal-checked the 2nd or 3rd of June, so hopefully out of that batch of 3, at least one or two took...

    Avalon1984-Chicken, horses, pigs, oh my!

Hey Trim, The only thing I did for a bait hive was to use the left over frames that I had cleaned of honey and wax (and when I say cleaning I mean I just used the hive tool and scraped it all out), I set that all up as if it were an active hive (bottom board, entrance reducer on small, put...
