What did you do to save $ today?

We got our electric bill today. The cost of electricity for this last billing cycle was $73.01. Our KW usage is down from last year at this time. This billing cycle we used a total of 381 KWh and our current year to date we have used a total of 1723 KWh, while our previous years useage was 1915...

What did you do to save $ today?

I have been hauling composted cow manuer for my garden from a farmer in the next town over for $5 a pickup load. The compost at the garden center cost $45 a yard and is full of sticks so I feel I got a good deal! I had to replace the belt on my tiller. The belt gave up the ghost the other day...

    So pitch your theory!

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. There is nothing that any of us can do that does not impact something on this earth. The fox hunts and a rabbit dies. Too many fox in an area, the rabbit population becomes almost extinct. When this happens many of the foxes die. The...

Share your tips for lowering grocery bills here! :D

Try to get your pantry stocked so that you are eating out of your pantry and not your weekly grocery purchases. I if you can get to this point, you then can shop for the sale and loss leader items only. This will save you tons in the long run. My grocery bill for two people is between 50-75...

What did you do to save $ today?

I had an oportunity to go into the Big City (45 miles away) with my mother and sister. I opted to stay home instead and plant peas, carrots, parsnips, and lettuce. I also cleaned the hen house.

My electric is NOT subsidised by our government! The Champlain Islands gets their electricity mainly from Canada. Our Co-op has contracts with Canadian electricity producers. That is why my costs are so high. If we were getting our energy from Vt's only Nuc plant or from Burlington's wood chip...

    So pitch your theory!

Pat, I have no problems living without imported fruits and veggies. I have no problems with not having cheaply made stuff imported from China. Unfortunately, that is not what our government is pushing. I, for the most part, believe in supporting American industries first. I only stray from...

    So pitch your theory!

I am curious how much of an increase in your electric bill would you find as an acceptable incentive? How much of an over all increase in your every day costs for food, gas, clothes, etc would you find acceptable? The costs to business will be passed on to you and me and all consumers, so the...

    So pitch your theory!

I didn't think that there was a view in the Mojave desert worth writing home about, but as a previous post of mine points out, there are still some that are having an issue with solar arrays there. A tortise is the issue there. I would love to get off carbon fuel, but I want electricity to be...

    So pitch your theory!

The last I knew, the feds were ponying up with a 30% rebate for qualifying installations. Around here it wouild cost around 40K for a system that would produce enough energy for the average household. The problem is that most people cant afford it! The cost gets worse if you take out a loan to...

    So pitch your theory!

Here in Vermont, we have had energy companies try to get commercial wind power started, without much success. It has been blocked by those who dont want a ridge line altered by windmills or a view impacted either. I think people think "Big Electric" is the cause for so few commercial energy...

What did you do to save $ today?

We did the same thing and now have 8 years left on ours. We went from a 30 year at 8% down to a 15 year at 5 3/4%. Been looking into another refi. If the rates drop any lower, we will try. We have great FICO scores but I hear that it is still dsifficult to get a refi approved.

    So pitch your theory!

One thing that has not been discussed on this thread is the fact that the current administration is pushing for cap and trade. As we have discussed, companies that are trying to get these alternate energy sources up and running are being thwarted at every turn. In most cases, this is being done...

    So pitch your theory!

I think it would be great if the power companies started to use more types of alternate energy. It is unfortunate that there are many groups that espouse conservation and a green lifestyle but are making it more difficult for the energy businesses to use these greener renewable alternatives. In...

What did you do to save $ today?

I went grocery shopping today and used the circular and my coupons to make my shopping list. Note: I do not shop for immediate use, I use my pantry and freezer to make my meals and my weekly grocery shopping is to keep the larder stocked with the items I use when they are on sale. There were 3...

    So pitch your theory!

I tried to price out going solar or doing wind (better in my area). My best guess is that it will cost me around 40K to do either. I did not bother to further investigate the cost because it would be too prohibitive. I wouldn't make the cost back until I was in my late 70's and that is if...

What did you do to save $ today?

I saved money yesterday by making my own rolling composter. DH and I spent the afternoon taking a narrow pallet and turning it into a work table by the garden. We then took a 55 gal plastic barrel and 4 wheel casters and made the composter on top of the new garden table. Total investment...

What did you do to save $ today?

I got 8 pounds of sweet red peppers today at the market for 29 cents a pound! I made a beef and pepper stir fry with 2 lbs, and sliced up 4 lbs into strips, which I froze. The remaining 2 lbs are going to be used for stuffed peppers tomorrow! I even took the inside ribs and seed area and chopped...

    TEA Anyone?

What I saw at the Vermont Tea Party, were people from different back grounds with at least one thing in common . . . a concern for the current spending and the radically growing debt and taxes that are sure to come. They expressed concern for their children and grandchildren, and the debt...

    TEA Anyone?

:ya I went to the Tea Party in Montpelier today. It was wonderful! The Tea Party lasted from 12 noon until 2 PM. This is a tough time during he week to get people out at a rally because they are working. I was pleased at the turn out. We are a small state (population wise) and this states...
