    waffles

A waffle iron is like anything else, make a point of using it for a while, then you enjoy it and look forward to it. I can't believe you had one in your closet for so long and didn't use it. Man, I would have had that sucker out for a visit--at dinner time. That is when mine gets used...

Help with Hardened Tomato Powder after Opening can

Try this-it might be faster than scraping. Get a strong screw driver or (better yet) a chisel. Wash it REALLY WELL. Grab a hammer to pound it with and use it to try to break the tomatoe powder up into chunks. Then you could put the chunks into your blender/food processer to re-powder. Good...

How many grind your own flour and where do you buy the grains?

I do not like to buy grains online. They are so heavy you pay a fortune for shipping. It is much better to try and find it locally if you can. Usually fresher, too. No one has mentioned the Golden Grain mill (goldengraingrinder.com). I am planning on purchasing one of these in the next week...

Questions for those with grain mills..

Hi! Welcome to the world of fresh, whole grains! You will be amazed at the taste difference. I like to make my bread with a combination of hard white wheat, rye, and flax. Many years ago I learned that adding 15% rye to your whole wheat makes it release more iron, so I have been doing it...

    we got baby goats!!

No, not at all. If they are old enough to be weaned and jump around as much as you say, they will do fine outside, even overnight. You could always put coats on them if you're worried, but I don't think you'll need them. Get them outside, and start teaching them some manners.

Had it with my bank! What are some alternatives?

Since you are a veteran (you mention your VA checks) you should check out USAA. https://www.usaa.com/ It is a bank/credit union for military personnel, and they are WONDERFUL. Best customer service, ever! Your check can be direct deposited and the auto payment done each month, just like now...

    Tent for Daily Living Purposes

My husband and I have talked several times about what we would do, if worse came to worst, and we were in your shoes. We have decided that we would build ourselves a hoop house to live in. We have built several of these already for our animals. Our goats currently live in one 10x20. We cover...

where can I buy cayenne pepper in bulk?

I order a lot of my spices from San Francisco Herb Co. http://www.sfherb.com/ I checked, and they have cayenne. Their per pound price is better than the one from Bulk Foods, but the website doesn't have a price listed for 5 lbs. I know they offer multi pound discounts, though, so check them out.

    Cat bag taters and to-maters

I would think these bags would work great. I have no experience personally, but have read of similar things being used. Some links to check out: http://www.globalbuckets.org/p/grow-bags.html http://www.gardensoxx.com/...

    Kitty Litter Containers

I have one for the buckets that I bet most of you never thought of  When our children were small we used a bucket with a couple of inches of litter in the bottom for a potty chair for our van! Our little toilet potty seat fit perfectly on top. The parent/older child who was in the back...

    cat litter

OK. I'm confused. I thought you weren't supposed to use cat (or dog) poop in your compost pile, garden, etc. as it had contaminates and disease in it. And here you guys are saying to use it. Is this just one of those "old sayings" that really have no basis and that we now can safely ignore...

    Homemade Automatic Dishwashing Detergent?

What is lemishine? Where do you buy it? Do you mean you add it to the powder mix or to the vinegar? This sounds like a great thing to try. Years ago I made my own laundry soap (no longer do as we created a grey water system using the water from our washer to water our fruit trees and borox...

    Compost pile not "working"

Composting is easy--unless you want to do it hot and fast, like you:rolleyes: Then there are so many variables...like Dawn419 says, it's almost impossible to get it to work in 14 days. To do so you have to have just the right balance of carbon to nitrogen, the right level of moisture, and the...

    $5 Christmas Gift Exchange

If you have a dollar store in your area this should be easy. First, pick out a container with a lid. Our local dollar store has some ice cream bucket ones with handles and cute designs. Then fill with $4.00 worth of stuff that you find: ornaments or other decorations, snack food, holiday...

Do any of you go WITHOUT health insurance? By choice?

No one, yet, has mentioned share programs like Medi Share http://mychristiancare.org/medi-share/. While these plans are not "insurance" exactly, they work a lot like it and qualify you for a HSA. My pastor belongs and pays a bit over $500/month for his family. It might be worth checking into...

I need an outdoor oven. DIY idea

I don't see why you would need to brick it--it's already insulated. I also don't know why you would want to replace the inner workings with a grill burner. Go to a propane place (where you would buy the tank from and get it filled) and see what it would take to fix it. You might be surprised...

Herbal Remedies for e-Coli or Salmonella

Another thing that really helps...kefir--made by yourself with real kefir grains. When I was researching kefir before purchasing my grains, I learned that e-coli will not grow in kefir. In fact, kefir kills it! They actually put e-coli bacteria in a batch of kefir and it was completely...

    Start-up costs for dairy goats??

OK, I'll jump in here and add my 2 cents worth:D We just got our two goats last Feb. so have had them almost a year. Actually, they were given-FREE!!! along with a supply of hay and grain, a hoof trimmer and other miscellaneous stuff-to us the previous fall, but a friend offered to keep/breed...

Introduction & Uses for Old Tires??

I have been a major scrounge/recycler/junk collector since I got enough land to store my stuff!! One of the things I really enjoy doing is making useful items out of old tires. A long time ago, in a state far, far away, I went to a home-show type class on making things from, you guessed it...
