    Is self sufficiency sustainability?

Ok, I'm confused. In reading the debate big food vs. home canning, I can see where big food is more efficient but I'm not sure about sustainable. I think of sustainable as something that you can do over & over without decline in quality. Farming, for instance, you can grow your produce by not...

Anyone grow their own avocados? I've tried & tried, but I can't get a pit to sprout.

    Is self sufficiency sustainability?

As I read this, I can't help thinking about what would happen to the economy if a good portion of people woke up one morning and decided to live the SS lifestyle. For example, most of us can live on far less $ than your average city dweller. We use less energy, spend less at the grocery...

My chickens.....my friends??? Pics of my meat friends on pg. 13

I am vegetarian and I get just the opposite type of questions...... You don't eat your chickens & turkeys? Why not? Why keep them then? A friend visited and looked around and said "Food, food everywhere and not a bite to eat." I never give anyone grief about processing their own animals...

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

They are three days old now. I bottle feed them about every 6 hours and in between try to read everything I can about goat care. As usual, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've got the feeding thing down pretty well and they are certainly peeing everywhere but I'm concerned that they are not doing...

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

Things are finally calming down a bit. The garden is coming along. Every day I sneak out for an hour or two to put more seeds in. Whenever someone catches me out there they feel the need to tell me what I'm doing wrong. Apparently, I plowed at the wrong time, my rows are too close together, I...

    Favorite ways to eat oatmeal

Oatmeal is absolutely the only food on which I put salt. Lots & lots of it. I think it's a 'Russian" thing. The only other people I've met outside my relatives who eat it like that are Russian or Ukrainian.

    Turkey first aid advice needed

Thanks! He managed to find the waterer and drink so he can still see something. He was wildly unhappy about the washcloth touching his face. I'll give him another hour or two to calm down and try again. The other tom is on Craigslist.....he's history.

    Turkey first aid advice needed

I went out this morning and my Bourbon Red tom (named Jerry) had a very swollen face and it is covered in blood. There is blood on the roost as well. My Narragansett tom (named Toast) has some dried blood & what looks like a few peck marks. I can't find any traces of a fight with an outside...

What SS Mistakes Have You Made?

I should put out a video of "What not to do when you move from the city to the farm without a manual" I'd use a stunt double to recreate the 'tractor climbing the wall of the barn because I can't stop it"scene and the 'inexorable slide down the hot metal roof with an open bucket of paint in...

What SS Mistakes Have You Made?

I have tons, but just a few come to mind right away: Don't try to make soap in a chipped enamel pot. Don't make a monstrous garden just because you got a plow. Don't buy a glass top stove. Don't have every form of heat & cooking dependent on electricity. The pantry is the worst possible place...

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

I sort of went a little crazy when the weather got warm and there's been a frenzied burst of activity around here. Here's a brief run-down: Took down the garden fence, plowed the garden, spread some absurd amount of compost over it (something like 10 square yards, one wheelbarrow at a time)...

    Free...veggie question for ya

Sometimes I get the veggie blahs as well. Usually a trip to an Indian restaraunt or a new cookbook helps. Sounds like you could use a break in the kitchen for a few days!

In the garden! Questions and searches for open pollinated plants.

I bought all my seeds from Bountiful Gardens this year so I can save the seed. All their stuff is non hybrid and the prices are pretty good, you get a lot more seeds for the $ then Seed Exchange.
