Lets talk about First Aid kits.............

There are several items I'd add to my first aid kit- and I was originally thinking about these things for my own livestock. Certainly they could be added to a human first aid kit. There have been times when I needed syringes and needles...several sizes for different critters needs...big...

Recession is over!! New Title: Smokers!

I had one of those Brinkman smokers too...it works, just don't try to smoke anything that needs to be done by a certain time... In my case, it was the Thanksgiving turkey one year...it was so darn windy that it took several HOURS past my estimated mealtime before the bird was finished. It was...

Dehydrated Cat and/or Dog Food Recipes, Anyone?

I know its a weird question, but I saw a product on the Internet for Dehydrated cat food...you have to add warm water to it before feeding to your critter. Since I'm not nuts about regular 'dry' food, I thought, well....let's see if there's something new to learn out in cyber space!

Dehydrated Cat and/or Dog Food Recipes, Anyone?

Has anybody ever tried to dehydrate homemade pet foods? Commercial dry food is sensible of course, (if not always the best food) but bulky. I prefer wet food for my cats and dog, but canned stuff would be too tough to fit in a go-bag, I'd say...so I wonder if there are light-weight, high...

What do I do with THIS???

This is a great thread! You all are sure making me hungry :drool :old When I was little, my parents were in the poultry business. They sold eggs and raised broilers. (Not like the chicken batteries of today). I remember my mom and the hired help sitting at our kitchen table breaking eggs...

need help with my grocery budget...

I don't know if you have a local Craigs List, but I often see people offering to allow folks to pick their unused apples and other produce. Of course this is during the harvest season. Sometimes its free and other times you can get the produce for pennies on the dollar.

    Cash or metal?

Gosh, along the same line as antibiotics...painkillers would probably come in handy as bartering tools as well.

Raising livestock a bit more naturally...

Hi beekissed...I think that we share a similar outlook on natural "farmsteading". Have you read this book- "Gaia's Garden A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture" by Toby Hemenway... I bought it recently (wanted it badly enough to pay full price for it) and have really enjoyed learning his...

    Catfood, the pressure-canned version

I have another question about the catfood, freemotion... How long have your cats been eating this? I'm thinking that mine would probably need a "getting used to it" time period...so I'm wondering if I should try out the recipe on them before actually canning it... Leanne

I can't resist making a comment here. When I saw the title of the thread, I thought you were going to discuss "IRONING dollar bills...DUH"! And my second comment is... Here in Oregon the meth addicts are stealing metal and copper wiring EVERYWHERE...It is a HUGE problem. They even...

Uses for those nasty little ends of hand soaps............

When I was a kid, my mom took a washcloth, folded it and sewed around the edges to form a pocket or pouch and would fill it with soap slivers. I think she then basted the open edge shut...and I used it in the tub. As a little kid, the soap was forever slipping away from me, but not after that!

What did you do to save $ today?

Hi freemotion, I am new here, and would like to know more about your cat food project. Is there a thread about it somewhere? If not, could you start one? I'd love to find a recipe and a way to preserve foods for 5 hungry cats... Thanks, Leanne

    Cash or metal?

What about antibiotics as a bartering item? Do you think paper money would be worthless? I keep a hundred in singles but have quite a few rolled coins stashed.

How much animal feed do you keep on hand??

Hi Jessica, Have you tried drying any of your greens for the rabbits? I wonder if they'd like them. I know the chickens will peck at them. I live in Oregon where its zone 8, so I know I can keep greens going all winter, but having dried and stored stock is somehow important to me. Leanne
