    blueberries!

Back from aldi, $1.29/pint, not bad and they are local, that surprised me a little. I need to get the kids out to the blueberry farm and pick our own, it's just been way to hot for them.

    Venting Time!

I always opt out of that stuff and i make a point that I do not want a cake or gift for my birthday. The last company I worked for was rather large (150 people in the location I worked at) so instead of individual birthdays we had a company funded 'snack and cake' once a month and announced...

    Arnica....I got some!!!

Arnica is fantastic, I ran out recently and couldn't bring myself to buy another tube @ $12. I would love to grow it, never even thought that was a possibility.

    Greatest Organic Pesticide: VACUUM POWER!

I used a shop vac to remove wasp nests from the door frame of my truck, that worked well... so i guess this could work, unfortunately the plants i have bug problems on are my tomatoes (stupid hornworms) the vacuum would just suck up the plant. i could see it working very well on trees though.

You're Not Allowed To Be Self Sufficient

i tried donating 11 dozen eggs to a couple local food banks and got turned away. One volunteer told me she felt horrible turning me away because these families need the fresh food but it is policy not to take eggs. I gave her my email address and she passed it on to a few families, they now...

You're Not Allowed To Be Self Sufficient

I'll admit it... i still drink Cherry Coke. SHAME! I'll buy it when the cans are on sale and a 12 pack will last me almost a month but still, i feel guilty every time i pop one of those cans open. I hide when I drink them too, don't want the kids to see!

lol. That does work but I don't want to push my luck because next weekend I'll be canning pickles! I'll put the crock pot out when I can so I hear less crap about the things I can't do outside (like pickles)

You're Not Allowed To Be Self Sufficient

I was a little put off by that part too, it's not a matter of poor people can't afford to eat right, its a matter of poor, uneducated, busy families don't know how to eat right. Wake up 10 minutes earlier, make an egg sandwich for each member of the family, 2 slices of wheat bread and 2 eggs...

    Zero Food Waste Challenge

We canned our hot banana peppers in vinegar and they are damn tasty, i put them in sandwiches and wraps :) I also add some chopped fine to mild salsa (because I like things spicy and DH, not so much) I also canned some sweet bananas (also in vinegar) and added a little sugar, dh loves them and...

Hm. rotisserie chicken for dinner tonight, convenient... I think I am going to put the crock pot outside for this one, DH hates when the whole house smells like food, unless it's cinnamon buns or apple pie, lol. i second using the baggies, I have everything in baggies in the basement freezer...

You're Not Allowed To Be Self Sufficient

I watched Food Inc. on netflix yesterday. I have been aware and careful about I've been feeding my family, but that movie opened my eyes quite a bit more. I've already started making more changes. I don't want my children being part of the diabetes statistics. edit: both The future of food...

Help a sister out, please! (Operation~Find Sam a Friend!)

When I was that age i was shy. The farm I rode at had a 4h club and joining that club was the best thing my mom ever made me do, lol. Check with your local extention for an existing club or maybe look into starting your own based at the riding stable. Horses are a wonderful thing to bond...

Evacuating when told to by Government Officials

I just don't imagine being able to go anywhere, NJ is over populated and the roads are already parking lots. You need to cross a bridge to leave the state, so if flooding is a problem it's on all sides. I am far enough inland to avoid storm surge from a hurricane or nor'easter. Fires are...

    Disturbing & Spreading New Trend....

If the issue is economic and these teens are doing this because there are no public pools and youth activities to keep them entertained maybe it's time for parents to reconsider spending hundreds on the newest gadgets and $30-70/month on data plans and put that money toward something worthwhile...

    Homestead Careers

When I was in 4H there was a club that raised and trained service dogs for people who needed them (non-profit), maybe check with your local extension office and see if there is a similar program in your area.
