    Make your own washing soda

I've asked several stockers and nobody even knew what I was talking about. They showed me regular baking soda, right next to the borax. Never thought to try a pool supply store though.

    ...

Beyond knitting/crocheting hats, blankies and a couple of sweaters, I didn't make many clothes myself. I am so slow knitting that I'd probably get farther on a sewing machine instead! I didn't want to know my baby's sex either. Drove people nutz and I enjoyed every minute of it! I nicknamed...

    2 liter bottles

I save them up to use as humidity domes for starting rose cuttings. (Cut the bottom off, poke bottle down over cutting either in ground or in a pot, loosen the lid a bit.)

    Make your own washing soda

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :bow I was wondering what the difference was! I couldn't find washing soda anywhere and it seemed silly to have some shipped to me (especially when the whole goal for making laundry det. is to SAVE money.) I got a huge box of baking soda and I've been sitting...

    Homemade Chicken Stock

I think you can't beat an old hen or rooster for stock. The older the bird, the better the flavor. I've also used the carcasses from a roasted chicken or YUM--smoked turkey. But spent layers or tough roosters, I just bone them out and toss the whole thing in the stock pot (along with a couple...

What does your user name mean?

Journey is my horse's name (funny, I always thought I'd name a baby boy that--but the horse came along first!) 11 is the day of my birthday.

    Got my antique sewing machine!!!!

Congrats! I was just thinking about the one my great-grandmother had and wondering what the heck my grandparents did with it... I'm sure they sold it and most everything else. I would have loved to had it, but I was lucky to get the wrought-iron bed I wanted so badly and her wedding ring. I...

Abi (and/or anybody else with fabulously awesome sewing skills)-HELP!!

Those ruffled ones are cute! Take measurements on yourself, cause you're going to need to know that. You can kinda see on the patterns how it works out from the different sizes and you should be able to guess about where your size would be. The pattern you have, of course, won't do you much...

    Septic system questions

My house was built in 1942 and I have no clue how old the septic is...and my elderly neighbors who once owned the house have no idea even where it is, much less how old it is. We've lived here 4 years now and never had it pumped out. No problems so far! But we do also have a separate drain...

    quick question about making jerky

The dehydrator will to some degree cook it, albeit at a very low temp. It is the salt in the marinade that preserves it. If you use a low-salt marinade or seasoning (particularly if you mix up something homemade or use something not made just for jerky) you will need to consume it within a 2-3...

Calling food nerds! Q: Why brine meat?

I don't brine anything because I don't want the added sodium. But all my home raised meats are already tender and juicy enough as is, IMO, so I can live without it!

    Gardening with Infants?

I live to garden and couldn't quit if I tried. My neighbor got on my case for crawling around in the garden when I was 9 mo. pregnant and bombarded me with ol' wives tales. :D My little girl was very "high needs" when she was an infant and wouldn't let me get too far away from her in the...

Ladies only!!! - talk me down!

If it's been 30 days since the start of your last period, you ought to be able to get a reading on a pregnancy test by now. Could just be a weird cycle. Sometimes if I've gone through unusual stress or considerably extra physical activity, mine will go weird like that. Could be a female...

Tortoise - meat strecher ideas! Please share more :-)

Legumes are a great substitute for meat and are nutritionally a good substitute too. I make a killer veggie lasagne using kidney beans instead of ground beef. I like this with some spinach layered in there too. Otherwise, it is about the same recipe as regular lasagne.
