Thinking about trying a "locavore" diet....does anyone do this?

If it is a budget issue as much as diet, sit down with the kids and talk it over. Let them know they can have only a certain number of things each time you go grocery shopping. For us, we do homemade pizza - with organic sauce, homemade crust, nitrate free meats, cheese, all the good stuff...

    Thistles? Non-chemical solution?

The Conservation District manager in the 'Bow (where we moved from) said that pulling or digging Canadian thistle "just makes it mad", and it will come back stronger. The reason is that if you pull it up, you always leave just a little bit of root in the ground. And a new plant grows from EVERY...

THE OFFICIAL GARDENING AND PRESERVING CHALLENGE

The TP and flour paste seems like overkill for making your own seed tape. I should think toilet paper would work if you just dropped the seeds on it, folded it over, dampened it and let it dry. It sticks to itself when wet, and stays stuck when dry. Seeds would push right through it when the TP...

Shiloh Acres - RAIN!!!!!!! and maple syrup! ;)

We had a slow starter too. I syringe fed her an electrolyte mix that I had on hand (powder - cost about $4, and I only used about 1/4 tsp for the doeling), plus molasses. About a teaspoon of molasses, plus that electrolyte mix, in about half a cup of hot water. Our doe would not nurse. I...

Need Bantam Hens near San Antonio

I need some Bantam Hens, laying age or close to. Need about half a dozen. I need them for egg production, so I need breeds that are reasonably good layers - Dutch, Sumatra, Cochin, d'Uccle, d'Anvers, Wyandotte, etc. One roo would also help so I can hatch some more.

    baking soda for clean hair?

Baking soda IS too harsh to use on a regular basis, if that is all you are using. The ACV helps to compensate for that. Or in my case, the shampoo does that.

    baking soda for clean hair?

I think I found a partial solution to my shampoo needs. I've been diluting the shampoo by about half, and then adding a little baking soda. That seems to make the Burt's Bees shampoo NOT cause greasy buildup on my hair, and results in my hair being silky soft. Nice. Plus it extends the shampoo...

How to help keep milk cold while still in the bucket (during milking)?

I'd never use one of the gel ice packs in the milk. They are too prone to wear, and when they wear, they can leak gel before you are aware that there is any visible damage to the packet.

Another goat question, do you grain your babies?

Well, we use the same feed mix you do, without the ACV. We just let the babies nose in with the mom whenever they show interest. When they want it, they'll eat it. Our kids generally start lipping at the grain about a week old, and get greedier from there! :) If we wean the kids a little...

    What is this veg?

Actually, You are both equally correct. It is called both Broccoli, and Cauliflower. It is technically a cauliflower, according to that Wikipedia article, but more commonly called Broccoli in the seed catalogs. Nutritionally, closest to cabbage in compliment. Probably delicious under cheese...

Anyone feed chickens a simple mix of whole grains?

My chickens are currently in cages (noplace else to put them out here), and our ducks are in a 30 X 50 pen that they keep pretty well eaten down. So we have to provide all of the greens for the chickens, and extra for the ducks. The garden is right next to that though. We planted lots of...

Is becoming Self Sufficient the new fad?

I think if soaps weren't there, people would find something better. I think that they ARE there, often times distracts people from finding what is better. Yeah, that's just me though. I'd rather LIVE than just have the illusion of it. :)

Anyone feed chickens a simple mix of whole grains?

We fed our chicks grains, meats, and greens from day 1. They never had chick starter at all. That's what they'd get in the wild. You just use small seeds and cracked grains if you feed them raw, or you can cook them into a mash. We cooked it because they ate better that way and grew better...

Is becoming Self Sufficient the new fad?

We had been taking care of rabbits for a month and a half when people started asking us for advice. Now they are asking us for advice on things we have not even done, simply because we've done the research in preparation - since we've done more research than they have, they ask us. Funny...

Is becoming Self Sufficient the new fad?

Naw, more like hostages. That is what I've felt like for the last two years, having to buy organic food, in a place where I could not grow my own, having to pay whatever price the store nearby chose to charge for it, and only being able to buy what they had available at the time. There were...

    baking soda for clean hair?

There may be something in the water. Chlorine does that to me. Also, certain nutritional deficiencies (very common if you eat any foods with preservatives in them) can cause Sceborrhetic Dermatitis. Oily skin that flakes and scales like dry skin. Taking Borage Oil capsules, 1 daily, can really...

Green Acres... What to look for in a property?

Another bit about wells... There is a vast difference between a "shallow well" and a "deep well". They are often termed this way in property descriptions. A shallow well is often hand dug, just deep enough so that water pools in it. They are more likely to go dry in the summer, and are easily...

    baking soda for clean hair?

I tried this, and could not do it. My hair tends to be fairly oily, and it didn't remove any of the oil at all - so I had dank, greasy clumps of hair in the back. Nasty. Not something I felt like I could keep trying to see if it improved. Having problems with all of the natural shampoo...

Anyone feed chickens a simple mix of whole grains?

Thought this was worth posting: http://www.handhpoultry.com/SoyFree_ChickenFeed.html I'll bet it is expensive, but I think you could probably make your own mix that is similar. Should not need much if you give the chickens access to lots of vegetation though. Scratching in the dirt won't give...

Green Acres... What to look for in a property?

You should be able to find out pretty easily if it is on a 100 year floodplain. A place we looked at last fall (with temporary occupation in mind) had flooded the previous summer. Not something we wanted to deal with, since the entire property went under. Also, soil. Is there bedrock...
