We ended up 485 lbs. which is slightly less than we projected. Somehow we managed to fit it ALL into our freezers!! Yay!! No marathon canning session tomorrow!!! :weee
We live in TN in a two story home. It has 3 bedrooms (all upstairs) and is about 1600 sf. We have a fireplace (downstairs living room) which we never use. In fact, I built a padded wood panel that blocks it for heat loss (or cool air loss in the summer). I would like to get a wood stove insert...
Yes, I already have a pressure canner. I kind of liked the idea of being able to pop open a can and whip up some tacos on the spot. LOL
I really don't know anyone who might want to go in with us. I asked around but my friends aren't terribly thrifty. They do things like eat out constantly and...
Yah, no family. :/ The weight would be the processed/packaged. The steer's live weight was 1000 lbs.
$13 for a dozen jars?! Seriously?? :ep That is horrible!
I know. I can't imagine...but it would be cheaper than buying another freezer.
Even if I had to buy the jars, I could pick them up for about $5 a dozen (with coupons I have). 6 cases would be $30 before tax. Wayyy better than $200, KWIM?

I know I am mostly answering my own question and sound slightly creepy talking to myself but maybe this will help someone else eventually. LOL
I discovered I can preserve 2 lbs of beef in a...

This says 30-32 lbs of meat per cu foot. And apparently my freezer above has 6 cu feet if I ditch my ice maker. That bumps me to 14 cu feet. That would hold 420-448 lbs. :/ Crap.
That leaves up to 180 lbs of beef to process/can. :th
Someone...
Gotta love wikianswers:
I read that each cubic foot there is 62.3 lbs of water weight per cubic foot. By those calculations I can cram 747 pounds into my freezer space. BUT water weight would waste no space (hehe...that sounds like a stupid children's tongue twister). Meat is going to have gaps...
OK...the GOOD news is we got a sweet deal on a steer from my kids' former gym teacher. The meat has been hung and will be ready for us to pick up on Saturday. We are expecting 500-600 lbs! :D The BAD news is we only have a 8 cu freezer. How much meat will that hold? We can jam it in there, use...
That would be me. I have my MA in Education and am fried by the system. I am at home unschooling my 12 year old. My 13 and 8 year olds still want to go to public school which is fine. But my 12 year old is a sensitive soul and learns at a slower pace than your average kid so we take our time at...
Fall arrived exactly today in Clarksville, TN! We dropped from 80+ to a lovely 68 with breeze to boot. I found so much joy in wearing a sweatshirt while drinking my coffee outside while chicken watching this morning! :love
