    Documentary to watch

annmarie I'll have to look for the companion documentary. It was so very sad, but like I said, thats the Man. eggzetera Yeah, most of the main characters on Deadwood were based on real folks. Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Bills friend Charlie Utter. Bullock was real, later befriended a...

    Documentary to watch

I watched this documentary last night called "Escape from Suburbia". It was about the peak oil/global warming crisis. The part that really got to me showed a 14 acre plot that the mayor of LA had "given" to South Central after the Rodney King riots. This land was used to grow an awesome...

    seed quality?

Cool...I think I will pick some up tomorrow. Another question....thinking of using the styrofoam trays meat comes in to start in. I was wondering if they were deep enough for lettuce, cabbage, and mustard starts.

    seed quality?

The other day at Orshelens I bought a number of garden seed packets ranging in price from $1.20-1.99. Today they have another display from another company with garden seeds 5 for a dollar. I was wondering is there a difference in quality? Will the cheaper brand not sprout as much? Any help...

Advice Needed on Value Added Products

FC If you have spare time in the evenings(which it sounds like you don't lol), maybe you could take up beading small jewelry. My wife makes traditional Chickasaw regalia(and some with a modern twist) for everyday wear or powwow. She does pretty good, its a paying hobby(I'm so proud of her!)...

How many of your SS choices were values/beliefs-based vs. financial?

I grew up on my grand dads farm till age 14, and was immersed in animal care, crops, wildlife management, and country living. My mom and I moved to town, and for years I was a fish out of water. After graduation I drifted into the "cool crowd"...striving to be hipper than the next, be on top...

Are we improving our financial outlook being ss?

sharenh Sounds like ya'll are doing all the good. It feels good to accomplish something real rather than go "spend" to fill the gap inside. I was(and still am at times) so impulse spending. And all that "stuff" never made me happy. But watching my chicks, messing with the plants, clearing...

    Preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse

IMO you wouldn't want to try to eradicate the problem on your own(i.e. no bait...you yourself would be bait enough). The contagion would be to widespread to handle. They tried for months in Day of the Dead, to no avail. Better to try for an island that you could clear out, and hope they don't...

How long would you make it??

This would only apply in northern regions, but I have read about meat storage via digging down to where the ground is frozen and making an undergrond fridge. I read about this in Jean Auels Mammoth Hunters, so I have no practical experience witht this, but someone may need/use this info...

    foster parenting

We try not to spank except for serious stuff(lying, cursing, hitting). We have my wifes 4 nieces and nephew. At first I wasn't too thrilled. We are guardians rather than foster parents so no foster kid money from DHS. Plus, the kids are very emotionally out there due to the violence in thier...

tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

If you just buy one or two when you go to the dollar store its not so bad on the wallet. They really do reduce your electric usage. At Dollar General you can get a two pack for $7(2 65 watts that use 13 apiece). I have found a lot of great ideas on here, and hope to contribute some of my own.

tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

Well, I have been remiss on my journal what with the holidays and all. To tell the truth, after my chicks got killed, I kind of didn't care about SS for a few weeks. Then Christmas hit(took the week of Christmas and then last week as vacation), so its been non stop with all the kids out of...

tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

Well, its been a bummer of a week. I was working on an onsite job Monday(I builld portable metal buildings). It was running late, and I was rushing to get home to feed the chickens before dark. I go out back and it looked like a massacre. A dog ripped through the wire and killed all six of...

tommywalnuts-My Self Sufficient Journal: Rural, Urban, and back again

I have decided to join in with a journal of my family and I and our efforts in becoming more self reliant. I grew up on a farm(to age 14), but have lived in a city for the past 22 years. My wife has always been a city girl, but her family has rural roots. We have decided to move back to the...

Names with Faces - Post your picture here!

Oh yeah Meers is a tradition. Any trip to the Wichitas has to be topped off with a 16oz pie pan sized longhorn beef Meers burger. This last time(Nov 1st) we had to stand in line for 45 minutes or so. Absolutley one of the best burgers around(#8 out of 10 according to the film "Hamburger...
