    Breeding season 2010

The woman who is going to do the AI on my doe gave me a collar off one of her bucks that is quite......pungent, shall we say? I let the doe I'll be breeding sniff it a couple of days ago. Mostly, she was just curious (I'm not expecting her to come into heat until next week anyway) but my old...

    Breeding season 2010

I used to have a pygmy buck. He had no problem nailing the big does - I often thought he grew wings when he escaped his pen. Nubian, Saanen, Togg......he managed to get them all, if the opportunity arose, I expect Zilli to come into heat in about two weeks. Now it turns out I will probably...

    Breeding season 2010

Yes, I'm shooting for around mid-November, too. That puts babies coming around the middle of April - nice time for babies here in the Pacific Northwest.

    Breeding season 2010

When I had goats before, I kept one, sometimes two, bucks. This time around, no buck and I'm trying to catch my little LaMancha in heat so I can load her up and haul her in to the gal who's going to do AI on her. It's a lot harder catching them in heat when there's no buck around, that's for...

House with 4 acres in Maine ...photo album added to 1st post

No kidding. I wish I was in a position to move. I'm curious as to how much the yearly property taxes are.

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

This highway is a favorite of the bikers - quite scenic. One of the first signs of spring for me is the bikers, singly and in large groups, cruising by. When the road was closed, bikers would go by and a couple of minutes later I'd see them come back by. Either a lot of them can't read the...

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

Well, I live on a highway, although the house is up the hill and not directly on it, and if I had had other options (like living in the middle of some huge piece of land), I would have taken them. But this is what I could afford and it hasn't been too bad. I've gotten used to the log trucks...

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

With what she did get, could she use that to have a new home built away from the bridge and road.....or even to have her existing home moved? With almost 20 of land acres left, that's what I would try to do. Wow, gd, you got royally screwed. Scary stuff. My son just got out of BOA. He...

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

And, I would imagine rent in places like that would have to be high as well because landlords would have to get enough to pay the taxes on their property. What the heck do poor people do when they can't afford either rent or a mortgage? I'm poor by most (all?) standards but at least I have a...

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

Over a thousand bucks a month in property taxes???? How can people afford to even own a home where the taxes are so high? I complain (often!) about the rainy weather we get here in the Pacific Northwest but, holy moly!, I'll keep the rain.....and the lower property taxes! I, too, pay extra on...

Got my mortgage statement in the mail today..

No kidding! :ep I'll never complain about my $800.00 a year, that's for sure! And I have five acres! Of course, my home isn't a mansion, that's for sure, but I'm happy with it......and the taxes.

You will never guess what is in my barn right now!!!! Now with Pics!!!

Awesome! And she's beautiful! I always wanted a milk cow but could never afford the initial cost so I got goats ("the poor man's cow" :)). I love my goats but would still have loved to have had a cow. Now, with just one kid still at home, I would never have the need for the amount of milk a...

What did you do to save $ today?

My local Goodwill store is small and tends to not have much of a selection so I've learned to "hit it" every time I go to town (twice a week or so). Even if I'm not looking for or needing something in particular, I will still make a quick cruise through the store - especially the housewares...

    Home work ideas

Wannabefree: Have you tried any of those work at home sites? I was skimming through them and came across this one: www.mturk.com . It caught my eye because it's an Amazon site and I guess (in my mind) that gives it some credibility. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it works but it...

    Goat milk and cream separators

This is what I'm concerned about. I would hate to invest the money and find out a basic cream separator designed for cow milk will not work for goat milk. I have a pint sour cream container in the freezer about half full of cream. When it's full, I'll thaw it out and try it and see how much...

    Goat milk and cream separators

Do you make butter? I've made it when I milked before but it just takes so long to get enough to mess with. I'm still hoping someone might have some experience with goat milk and using a cream separator. Is your LaMancha "happy?" By that, I mean does she wag her tail a lot? I've always used...

    Goat milk and cream separators

I thought that the price might make it worthwhile to give it a shot but I'd still have to get a lot of butter to justify it. $75.00 could buy a lot of butter! I wasn't looking for a LaMancha; in fact, i wasn't even looking to get back into the milking routine at all. But someone who was...

    Goat milk and cream separators

After a six or seven year break from milking goats, I broke down and bought a first freshener LaMancha a month ago. I'm absolutely loving having the fresh milk coming into the house twice a day and am looking forward to her next lactation when she should produce considerably more. Plus, I may...

Self sufficient camp over- west coast, in Oregon (still in planning!)

BBH; As of right now, I'm planning on being there but my plans may change by Saturday (I may be getting together with my son and granddaughters). I'll know later in the week and will be sure and let you know. :thumbsup

Self sufficient camp over- west coast, in Oregon (still in planning!)

There are rarely get-togethers for us west coasters on the forums I frequent and I think this is a great idea. Unfortunately, for me, if it's not within a day-trip distance for me, I would be unable to attend. Too many animals and not enough willing caretakers. I hope it works out.
