    March this year

I don't see anything specific to worry about for March. I suppose that you never know, though... I don't tend to try to prepare for predictions because there is always someone predicting doom and gloom. Instead, I try to be generally prepared and not dwell in fear on a day to day basis. That...

    How many acres is enough?

Denim Deb has the right idea. In some areas of the country, you would need 2 acres just to support a couple of goats because there isn't much to forage on. There is no correct answer until you settle on a region and do your due diligence. Check with the local extension program for the area that...

HELP! My Heating Bill is $500 a Month!

We're in Upstate NY (Onondaga County), so we're used to pretty rough winters. The first thing that you must do is find where your heat is leaking. If the furnace runs almost nonstop, then the house isn't able to hold the heat in. The furnace should kick on to raise the temperature to whatever...

How many have actually made the change?

I'm just checking back in here to respond to your question, Joel. My current office job is completely unrelated to our rentals and is only marginally related to real estate. I work for a nonprofit organization that does a lot of different things. The agency builds housing for low to moderate...

Storing gas on the cheap and small?

We store gas in "found" and discarded gas cans. The price of gas cans is outrageous. We have them in all sizes from 1 gallon on up to a 5 gallon can and never paid for any of them. Last fall I did pick up a 2 gallon can for $2 at Family Dollar. It was on clearance and I figured it was a pretty...

What I learned from the last four days without power

Pellet stoves have some electrical component or regulator that will not allow them to be used without electricity. For this reason, I will always want to have some sort of woodburner as backup heat. I like the idea of a pellet stove when it comes to how little mess it makes, but don't like the...

Snapshot--Moving on (A couple of photos added)

Hi, Mik! You do take nice photos. I always feel like a kitchen slug when I read about all of the things that you make. I am also quite fond of the name Annabelle since my childhood babysitter had the same name.

How many have actually made the change?

Warning: Another lengthy post ahead! I was raised on a small hobby farm in Central NY. We always had animals and a lot of my friends and neighbors did, too. My parents kept a well-stocked pantry because there were no stores that were really close by. They had both been raised during the...

    does anyone here raise quail?

Thanks for alerting me to this topic, Snapshot! I do raise quail and have for a few years. To answer your question about raising them in something up off of the ground, I would highly recommend it. Over the years we've had the neighborhood cats in the yard watching quail tv on almost a daily...

    Stock up alert!

If you don't buy it, then someone else will. (It will probably be one of us here at SS!) I don't feel at all sorry when I clear out a shelf if it is something that my family can use before it goes to waste. Other people will happen to be at the store when I'm not and will be able to catch...

    Starting from scratch!-Now I'm Excited!

Maybe we go against the grain, but we do burn pine in our fireplace insert and haven't had any problems. The pine has to be properly aged and should never comprise the bulk of what you are burning. Also, the temperatures of the fires that you burn make a difference in the amount of creosote that...

    Guns/Ammo the new Gold/Silver?

Maybe so... but a well-placed shot from a 22 can still incapacitate you and/or kill you. In a situation where medical attention is scarce or non-existent, even a compound fracture in the leg can kill you by causing an infection. There are many ways to die...some are just faster than others. In...

How many writers do we have here?

If you don't have editing skills, there is an entire community of folks in their forum section that might be able to help or someone you know can perform that function. I live in a college town so there are plenty of English majors around. In my case, the book was finished. I designed the cover...

How many writers do we have here?

It is fairly easy to self publish with Amazon and if you decide that you don't want to release the book officially or publicize it, you can just leave it in a PROOF stage and order a few copies for friends and relatives. At that point, it is still a physical book with a cover and everything.

Ideas for adding a few hundred $ in your pocket.

Most states have a Department of Agriculture or an extension program that can help you to learn the regulations for your area. The local Health Department may also be able to point you in the right direction.

How many writers do we have here?

I've been writing for years. Until recently, I wasn't writing the about things that I really enjoy. In my day job, I write business plans and grants for small businesses and non-profit organizations. In my spare time, I began to write fanfiction for a tv show that was on the CBS network. A few...

    Guns/Ammo the new Gold/Silver?

In a scenario like the one depicted in the book, One Second After, I wouldn't advise bartering any ammo away. It could be used against you. I'd be willing to trade away things that were of no use to me or that I could reproduce like excess food or animals.
